Dying Light: The Beast – Zombie Survival Is Evolving

The undead are back, and this time, they’re smarter, faster, and deadlier. Dying Light: The Beast marks a new era in zombie survival. On September 19, we will face the undead horde in the new Dying Light game. This time, the developers will not only present us with new challenges, but also gameplay on a completely new level.

Zombie survival game of 2025

The sequel to the Dying Light series, The Beast, introduces us to a hero already known from the previous instalment. Kyle Crane, whose goal is to revenge the Baron, returns to the game. The protagonist has undergone horrific experiments that did not leave him without side effects – the Beast mode is Crane’s new ability, born from years of brutal genetic experimentation that fused zombie DNA with his own.

When activated, this mode grants him devastating, superhuman powers, shifting both combat style and sensory perception, and from a gameplay mechanics perspective, this ability can be used when the meter is filled. In the upcoming game, inspired by Dying Light 2, we will also gain a better insight into getting to know the protagonist through interactions with key figures and cutscenes from a third-person perspective.

Techland has not only focused on presenting the protagonist but has also taken care to create an environment that poses an even greater challenge, but still maintains a balance between the difficulty of the gameplay and the player’s capabilities. Dying Light: The Beast makes co-op way smoother and adds dynamic weather that really shakes things up and keeps you on your toes.

Additionally, you will no longer be limited by stamina shortages, as the developers have enabled free exploration of the open world, where you will have to stay alert at all times. The infected will be even more aggressive and intelligent – they will communicate with each other, flank, and adapt to your tactics. Zombie AI will attack in the least expected situations; their strikes will not be easy to predict, and sometimes they will even impress you with their unpredictability. At night, they will be much more active, so after dark, don’t let your guard down.

Breaking the limits of open-world horror

Techland’s come a long way from their early days of making smaller, scrappy titles to becoming one of the big names in open-world zombie survival. They helped shape the modern “infected apocalypse” game with Dead Island, but it was Dying Light that really set them apart. Where most zombie games stuck to tight corridors or static arenas, Techland built a living, breathtaking city you could sprint, climb, and leap across – turning parkour into a survival tool. It wasn’t just about smashing undead heads; it was about using verticality, momentum, and smart movement to stay alive.

Now, with Dying Light: The Beast, they’re clearly aiming to push the formula further. Compared to Dead Island, which was slower and more RPG-focused with little verticality, The Beast emphasizes fast-paced movement.  Kyle’s new ability, the Beast mode, shakes up the rhythm of combat, the rural Castor Woods adds new challenges, and smarter AI promises fights that don’t just look better, they think better. It feels like Techland isn’t just trying to outdo themselves; they’re trying to make the zombie survival genre evolve again, the same way the original Dying Light did when first dropped. Unlike Left 4 Dead’s linear, co-op survival, The Beast drops players into an open world where AI adapts on the fly, progression is tied to skill trees, and every encounter can play out differently. It’s still zombie survival at its core, but with a mix of mobility, brutality, and freedom that gives it a niche all its own.

Conclusion

The Dying Light community kept the infected world alive long after launch. Players shared insane parkour clips, speedrun challenges, and brutal melee takedowns, while modders tinkered with maps, weapons, and game modes that kept things fresh.
