Dragon Quest XII update from Yuji Horii: I want to it to be worthy of Akira Toriyama’s legacy

Dragon Quest XII

It’s Dragon Quest day – May 27th – so we’ve finally got some kind of update on Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate from series’ creator Yuji Horii.

It’s been awhile since Dragon Quest XII was blatantly teased nearly five years ago and was officially announced two years later, in 2021. We haven’t heard much since but Horii has confirmed the game is still in development, despite concerns of cancellation after longtime producer Yu Miyake stepped down.

“Thank you so much to everyone for all the congratulations,” Horii said in a post. “I’m sorry for the worry about Dragon Quest XII, but I was just having a meeting about it. I can’t say much yet, but I want to make something worthy of the posthumous work of the two who passed away. I’ll do my best!”

Those two individuals who passed away are longtime Dragon Quest composer Koichi Sugiyama and legendary artist Akira Toriyama, who had a big part in creating the visual identity of the entire series.
