The legendary Doritos Pope meme first popped up back in 2014 when Canadian games personality Geoff Keighley appeared at a promotional event surrounded by Mountain Dew and Doritos snacks.

The meme has never really gone away and crops up every time Keighley hosts a new event, like his new Game Awards show.

It appears meme magic is real, and Doritos literally wanted to cash in on it as they wanted Keighley to host this year’s Game Awards as the Doritos Pope.

In an interview with Kotaku Splitscreen, Keighley revealed that Doritos contacted him and asked if he would be willing to wear the Doritos Pope outfit for the entire show.

“And I’m like, ‘Is this a serious conversation?’ They offered a bunch of money but I’m like, ‘No, we’re not going to do that.’ I don’t want to make a mockery of this show, this is to celebrate game developers.”
