Developer id Software has announced that Doom Eternal’s The Ancient Gods, Part One expansion will be available separate from the main game.
Speaking to PCGamesN, id Software executive producer Marty Stratton explained that players will be able to play the expansion without buying the base game.
“When we look at how many people have played through the game we have a large percentage – higher than 2016 – that have completed it, so you’re always looking at that and seeing how far players make it through your game. It’s important as we want the DLC to reach as many people as possible. In fact, you don’t even need to own Doom Eternal to buy the DLC and play it.”
Game director Hugo Martin explained how large the DLC’s scope is. “Most people would associate DLC with being of smaller scope – it’s kind of like the made for TV version of the movie, and the movie was the main game. For us, this is very much like a two-part film – this is every bit as grand as the main game was.”
As previously reported, the game takes place after and specifically references events of the main game. While this may seem bizarre, it is possible that some players may pick up the expansion first, then treat the base game as prequel. Even so, it is likely the expansion will introduce new features and mechanics compared to the base game.
PCGamesN reports The Ancient Gods, Part One will sell for £15.99 (est. $21.02 USD- we imagine this will be closer to $20 USD). The Year One Pass for Doom Eternal is also currently available for $29.99 USD.
The Ancient Gods, Part One launches October 20th.
