The Doom Eternal soundtrack is now available digitally for those who purchased the Collector’s Edition, and coming soon to Spotify, iTunes “and more.”
We had previously reported that the physical soundtrack was unavailable in the Collector’s Edition when it launched. Now idSoftware has confirmed (via Twitter) that the soundtrack is now available digitally. It can be found after users log-into Bethesda.net, within their transaction history. The soundtrack will soon come to Spotify, iTunes “and more” in the coming weeks.
Some had speculated the delay had been due to a conflict with composer Mick Gordon. This was born from an alleged screenshot of a text message showing disinterest of wanting to work with Id Software. However, we find little to prove its validity.
It seemed most were motivated by a comment he made on Twitter, showing his dissatisfaction with one of the soundtrack’s mixes. “I didn’t mix those and wouldn’t have done that. You’ll be able to spot the small handful of tracks I mixed (Meathook, Command and Control, etc…)”
Some have also taken the comment to mean he had less involvement with the soundtrack than many thought. Nonetheless, we do not feel this comment ads credibility to the earlier screenshot.
Even if Gordon had issues with Id Software, that alone would not cause a delay in the physical soundtrack’s production. While licencing or legal issues could hypothetically halt the soundtrack, There would have been reports of such a thing from legal records.
It is far more likely such issues were caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic (also known as COVID-19 officially, or Chinese Flu to others). It has affected many worldwide, from businesses to public gatherings and events. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].
This includes the postponement of GDC, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, along with the cancellation of E3 2020 (including digital events), the physical event for Gamescom 2020, and Comiket 98.
We also recently reported on an employee at Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Tokyo offices contracted the virus, along with voice actor Rick May (Soldier in Team Fortress 2, Peppy Hare and Andross in Star Fox 64) passing away due to the virus. SiliconEra also reports a member of Capcom in Osaka also contracted the virus.
The Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering are mapping the virus’ spread [1, 2]. As of this time of writing, there have been over 2.416 million total confirmed cases worldwide, and over 1.619 million active cases. There have been over 165,000 deaths, however over 632,000 people have made a “total recovery.”
