Disney has re-released Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon on Steam for Windows PCs. Battle at Procyon is a 3D space combat RTS based on Disney’s science fiction animated adventure film, Treasure Planet, which itself was inspired by Disney’s live-action 1950’s film based on the original book, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Treasure Planet: Battle at Procyon is set after the events of the movie, and was developed by Barking Dog Studios, which would later become Rockstar Vancouver. The ships are modeled in the essence of the movie, in which the vehicles are space versions of 1700s naval combat vessels, with sails made of special material to catch solar winds, booster rockets for maneuverability, and modern space weaponry for combat.
Players fight multiple enemies across a wide and lengthy campaign. For its time and criteria, the game was a positive success with players. It had tight strategic elements, a variety of other mechanics, and a very solid presentation that gave players the feeling of being on the fringes of outer space in a galactic, space-faring battle.
When the animated movie failed at the box office, all hopes to turn this into a franchise were dashed. But at least those who want to play the video game now can.
