Disney and Epic Games have announced a major partnership where the former has invested a stake of $1.5 billion USD into the latter for what they aim as a “multiyear project.”

The pair plan on collaborating to create an “expansive and open games and entertainment universe” which is to be connected with Fortnite, the popular battle royale game developed by Epic Games.

According to both companies, the persistent universe will allow consumers to enjoy through various means the many IPs Disney owns, including Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and others.

Here’s the announcement trailer of their ambitious collaboration:

Conceptually the idea sounds a lot like the “metaverse” term that many companies threw around in the past when that was a popular phrase to use.

While AI has mainly taken most of their attention, it seems the two companies here still believe it may still work. This is despite the fact that Disney shuttered their metaverse division nearly a year ago.

There is no official release date outside of the teased “soon(ish)” term used in the trailer.
