Before Arkane Studios became known for their work with Bethesda in the Dishonored game(s), they were a small French developer that piggybacked to fame by riding the nostalgic coattails of Ultima Underworld in their 2002 CRPG Arx Fatalis. Surviving both time and lack of legacy support in modern operating systems thanks to devoted followers, Arkane’s popular dungeon crawler has finally gained its first real bit of new content courtesy of the mod community.
Titled Arx – End of Sun, this new chapter in the Arx Fatalis story takes place before the first game and documents the events that lead up to the sudden appearance of “Am Shaegar” and the Noden. Since so little of the game lore is known and the hunger for a sequel has yet to be sated, it means some creative license had to be taken with the game’s plot, something the designers felt they did a fair job at handling.
Originally created as a Doom 3 mod, Arx – End of Sun is no longer reliant on the user needing a copy of the game and can be played independently of it. Those wanting to tackle the new quest can do so by downloading the standalone installer from Mod Database.
