Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Tops US Box Office the First Weekend of May

The recent anime film Demon Slayer: Mugen Train which released in US theaters last month managed to top the nation’s box office during the weekend of May 1st.

According to Funimation, not only is the film the highest grossing anime film of all time; but at the time of publishing it’s the third highest grossing anime film in the US. Late last year when the film premiered in Japan, it managed to become the highest grossing film ever in the nation.

The film adapts the Mugen Train arc that ran from chapters 54 through 69 of the manga. Tanjiro and friends board the Mugen Train to find demon slayer Kyojuro Rengoku, hoping to learn the Hinokami Kagura breath style.

However, Kyojuro has been sent to investigate strange disappearances on the train, and kill the demon assumed to be behind it. As people begin to fall asleep, no one can be sure who will be left alive when the train reaches its final stop.

he film beat out local hits Spirited Away and Your Name as well as international successes like Frozen and Titanic for the top spot.
