If you were expecting the long-awaited Death Stranding movie to simply retell Sam Porter Bridges’ journey, it sounds like that’s not the plan.
Director Michael Sarnoski has revealed that the A24 adaptation is being developed as an original story set within the Death Stranding universe rather than a direct recreation of the games.
Instead of trying to squeeze Hideo Kojima’s massive and often complex narrative into a single film, the team is focusing on new characters, locations, and stories while staying true to the themes that made the series stand out.
According to Sarnoski, the movie will still explore the strange world fans know, including the aftermath of the Death Stranding event, the blurred line between life and death, and the themes of connection and isolation that sit at the heart of the franchise.
The filmmaker also confirmed that he has been working closely with Kojima throughout development. While Kojima has given the project considerable creative freedom, he has remained involved by reviewing drafts and offering feedback as the script continues to evolve. Reports suggest the screenplay is now nearing completion.
Sarnoski hinted that some recognizable characters could make appearances as well, though the primary focus remains on telling a new story. The movie is expected to hit big screens around 2027.
