Shueisha’s Jump SQ have announced they will publish a one-shot of Death Note, the first new manga for the series in 12 years.

Jump SQ (via Crunchyroll) announced in their February issue that the 87 page one-shot would be published in the next issue, debuting February 4th. The brief teaser also stated “the Shinigami’s notebook is brought back to the world where Kira is dead…!!” The white-haired teen on the cover is Near, a successor to L who appeared in the manga’s original run, and was the focus of the one-shot in February 2008.

It should be noted that the artwork of Near used in the announcement (shown above) is identical to the cover of the original one-shot. As such we cannot rely on context clues, as it may have been assembled from older images for promotional purposes. The one-shot shall be featured on the cover of that issue, along with a color center page.

The new one shot was initially announced in 2019, and is set to be written and drawn by the original writer and illustrator- Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The original Death Note ran from December 2003 to May 2006, with a one-shot in 2008. This would make the newest one-shot the first continuation of Death Note in 12 years.
