Dead or Alive 5 Sells 1.5 Million Worldwide, F2P Downloads Over 3.5 Million

dead or alive 5 last round 06-28-15-1

It’s not a secret that Dead or Alive 5 has gotten a lot of different re-releases, post-launch content, and even a free-to-play version, but we’ve gotten word of the series’ newest milestone.

We’ve learned (via NeoGAF) that worldwide sales for all versions of Dead or Alive 5 have reached 1.5 million units. The game originally launched on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012, only to be re-released as Dead or Alive 5 Plus, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, and finally Dead or Alive 5 Last Round.

The free-to-play version is known as Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate: Core Fighters, and that launched alongside the release of Last Round. The more interesting figure is easily that Core Fighters downloads have reached 3.5 million worldwide – although we don’t have figures if those users upgraded to the full version.

Sure they’ve made a killing off of DLC costumes too. Now when the hell is DOAX3?!

For such an old game on so many systems with so many revisions I would have expected the numbers to be bigger but they must be making a lot of money from the large library of DLC outfits for the girls, constantly updated with new content, all at a premium price
    it’s an odd business model

also our unreliable but always interesting friend steamspy says the PC version is responsible for about 50,000 of those, above the average Steam game sale of 32k and a good number of sales for a game that shipped with worse specs than the PS4 version and no online

related to that, another mediocre Tecmo Koei game is making a lot of buzz on the steam community right now, check the forums for toukiden kiwami
the game went from top 4 seller with good reviews to beyond the100’s sellers and a low 60% of positive reviews in a flash
there was a sudden surge of people buying the game putting bad reviews and then refunding, a totalbiscuit critic of the game for having 30fps locked to the gameplay and all around drama

If there is one thing Koei Tecmo knows, its how to milk their audiences wallet… With skimpy outfit cosplay. I know from experience…

Considering how many times it’s been re-released 1.5 million seems a bit low, but then again perhaps its because of how many times it’s been released that it’s only over a million.

Milking by re-releasing the same game ala Super Hyper Mega edition etc.

I miss the days when DOA used to move a million on just the first release.

Maybe nickel and diming your fanbase with costume DLCs and going back on promises like saying not releasing paid DLC characters and then doing a complete 180 is why it sold like shit overall.

I was thinking the exact same thing. IIRC Dead or Alive 3 sold that much or more on the original xbox, which did not have a huge user base.

It’s not just Toukiden Kiwami. All their Steam releases are complete shit.

I wouldn’t touch a Tecmo Koei PC game with a 10 inch pole. If other Japanese developers like Bamco, Konami, and Sega can fucking do it right, there’s no reason for this crap developer to not do the same.

yeah you’re right, all their games tend to get a lot of heat but this time it was interesting seeing how the steam refunds took it to a ne wlevel

they lost itagaki, they changed the artstyle and tried to downplay the silliness fans liked and they adopted a very abusive business model that depends on hunting for whales that will buy all the DLC

not surprising if it’s selling less

Bet they made a tidy sum on the DLC as well though.

Even worst it’s £49.99 on Steam. It was a budget release on the PS4/PSV.

I’m waiting until the PC version is actually HD, actually uses my hardware, and due to bullshit, is less than $30 before I bite.

I hope so. If that’s what it takes to keep the series profitable and relevant, I’ll not hold it against them.

Well, I haven’t agreed with everything TN has been doing as of late. I am glad they still care about DOA enough to produce new content for it. My hope for the next game would be DOAX3. Seeing is how they see how much profit is available through DLC, I would hope that’s their next move.
