Dark Souls 2 is back online, Prepare to Die Edition is dead

Dark Souls II

FromSoftware announced that they have been able to restore online services for Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin on PC.

The game’s online services went down earlier this year after a dangerous exploit was discovered across all mainline games in the series. These exploits saw basically every game in the series have their online go offline, some longer than others.

However, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will never recover, due to the outdated coding in the 2012 version of the game, which was also the game’s original PC release. The Remastered version of Dark Souls is seemingly unaffected by the same issues.

“We have determined that we will not be able to support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition that was released in 2012, due to an aging system,” FromSoftware said. “We apologize for the long wait and ask for your understanding in this matter.”

Fans of the franchise can rejoice that online services have been restored for each game in some capacity, though it’s worth noting that the Remastered version does have some fundamental differences from the Prepare to Die Edition.
