We’ve learned the Danganronpa series is doing quite well in the west, according to NIS America boss Takuro Yamashita.
When speaking with MCV, Yamashita revealed that both Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa: Goodbye Despair both sold a combined total exceeding that of 200,000 units in both North America and Europe. Both games were released on the PS Vita last year, and you can read our reviews here and here (respectively).
“NISA is known for publishing niche JRPGs like Disgaea, but now we’re shifting the system towards visual novels after the success of Danganronpa,” said Yamashita.
Lastly, it’s worth reminding those of you who are behind on Danganronpa news – a third-person action spin-off, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, is coming west on PS Vita in both regions this fall. Finally, we also know that Danganronpa 3 is being worked on by series creator Kazutaka Kodaka, who we also had an intimate talk with at this year’s Game Developers Conference.

April 29, 2015 at 7:34 pm200,000 units certainly doesn’t sound like a lot in the grand scheme of things, but considering this is such a niche area, it’s really damn good. It makes me really happy to see two great games getting such a good reception. It’s also excellent to hear that they’re focusing on more VNs coming over, I highly look forward to them.
Oh, right, NISA. Hold on… Ahem, whine whine censorship, blah blah.

April 29, 2015 at 7:39 pm“shifting to VN’s”
Makes me nervous when a company with a reputation for unwarranted censorship says this.

April 29, 2015 at 7:46 pmI think we should be fine, they would look silly censoring the All Ages port!

April 29, 2015 at 7:47 pmHopefully they wouldn’t localise god awful hentai VN’s anyway and would have nothing to censor

April 29, 2015 at 7:49 pmConsidering that the traditional VN market in the west is around 10,000 for your typical dating sim, then yeah this is an impressive success. Lets just hope the Sony bundles Another Episode with Vita’s to seriously boost the franchise into even higher numbers.

April 29, 2015 at 8:17 pmI’m sure they’ll find something to censor or some way to mess up the code, somehow.

April 29, 2015 at 8:18 pm200,000 is a lot for a non mainstream non AAA, non super marketed game.

April 29, 2015 at 8:19 pmIf any game deserved to succeed, it’s Danganronpa.
Still waiting for 999 part three though……

April 29, 2015 at 8:52 pmI enjoy the series…but 200k across the US and Europe for both entries totaled together is not all that impressive…Ace Attorney and Professor Layton easily surpass those numbers with each entry. It just goes to show that there is a niche group within a niche.

April 29, 2015 at 10:14 pmNone of the games they’ve censored before were hentai.

April 29, 2015 at 11:15 pmCongrats, Danganronpa. I hope it veers towards more experimentation with genres.

April 30, 2015 at 4:21 amSince nearly every niche publisher has censored something now maybe not that unwarrented huh?

April 30, 2015 at 5:38 amIt’s not only niche, they’re PSP titles! I’d call that a breakout success given the sales of that platform.
