The title of this article is no mistake, the recently released expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, had a budget of over $80 million USD.
That estimated budget value has managed to trump over even some AAA releases over the past few years. Developer CD Projekt RED shared the numbers of their budget, where they gave a breakdown on where the money went.
Roughly $62.8 million went into the actual development for the expansion itself, while another $21.7 million was spent solely for marketing the game.
More shocking about this information is the reveal on the team size working on the expansion, where over 3,600 people had varying levels of involvement in Phantom Liberty’s development. Roughly 360 were considered core staff.
While this is most certainly a high cost, it appears to have made a return for the company. The main game returned to the top ten sales chart upon the expansion’s release and now the game has reached over 25 million total sales. Meanwhile, the expansion is reported to have reached over 3 million sales.
Cyberpunk 2077 is now available for Windows PC (via Epic Games, GOG, and Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. In case you missed it, you can find our thorough review on the original game here.
