On Halloween day, citizens of Okinawa woke up to disturbing news of the Shuri Castle burning down. The community acted quickly, however, and launched a crowdfunding campaign (via NHK News) to restore the castle.
The campaign has already reached 414 million yen by nearly 30,000 people as of today, November 7th.
Shuri Castle has been one of the most popular and recognizable tourist attractions to Okinawa prefecture, dating back hundreds of years.
The castle has been broken down and reconstructed multiple times over the years but this is the first time fire has claimed the structure.
The governor of Okinawa swears to have the castle fully restored by 2022, which marks the 50th anniversary of Okinawa rejoining Japan’s civilian government structural framework.
