Crowdfunded Final Fantasy Tactics Spiritual Successor Unsung Story Changes Developers 2 Years Behind Schedule

Kickstarter-funded projects have become increasingly more difficult to trust, mostly due to creators wasting the money, mismanaging the project, or delaying its release to infinity and beyond. One such project, Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, has been a tumultuous project at best.

Originally billed as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics, the game had a team of western-born veteran developers, as well as the Final Fantasy Tactics director/creator Yasumi Matsuno. Two years after the game’s planned release, Playdek is abandoning the project and handing it off to a new studio.

The new studio taking charge of the game and it’s intellectual property is Little Orbit, best known for titles like Barbie & Her Sisters: Puppy Rescue and Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians originally raised $660,126 on Kickstarter, to nearly 16,000 backers.

To be clear, Little Orbit is literally “starting from scratch,” with the studio combing through the comments and deciding the majority of fans just want a game that focuses on “the original single player game and Matsuno’s design that was promoted during the campaign.”

Furthermore, Little Orbit said their “primary goal is to separate the years of modifications and changes that were made while Playdek attempted to deliver something to their backers.” They also said they’re going to “honor all the Kickstarter backer rewards at no extra cost.”

It remains unclear if Matsuno is still involved in the project, or how aware he was of the shenanigans that were going on with its development.

“I can’t know how frustrating this has been for the many fans of this game. But over the coming weeks we will be reaching out to make sure we have all the current information for each of you, so that rewards can be delivered properly as we make progress,” the studio noted in the update.
