CrossCode Traps You in a Virtual MMORPG with Puzzle, Platforming, and Shooting Action

Radical Fish Games are an independent studio based out of Saarbrücken, Germany, and they have quite a unique pixelated RPG of sorts on their hands. Before you flip a table and hit the back button (should you not like pixelated games), click play on the above Indiegogo pitch video for their game, CrossCode.

This puzzling action-adventure RPG puts you in the shoes of Lea, a player who finds herself trapped within a virtual MMORPG in the distant future. She has lost her memory, and her ability to speak (for the most part). The only way to recover her memories is to progress through the virtual world, which is filled with plenty of platforms, puzzles, and RPG action.

Radical Fish came up with the idea for CrossCode eight or nine years ago when they began prototyping with RPG Maker. It was originally a puzzle game with the ricocheting balls, as seen in the above trailer. They’ve since expanded on it and it’s quickly grown into something entirely different.

Here are the game’s key features:

  • 16-bit, SNES-style 2D graphics with detailed animations
  • A soundtrack inspired by old SNES and Playstation JRPGs
  • A unique ball throwing mechanic with charging functionality and ricocheting balls, used for combat and puzzles
  • A fast-paced combat system featuring close and ranged attacks, guarding, dashing and great variety of special attacks.
  • A complete RPG system with leveling, equipment, consumable items and skill trees
  • A detailed movement system with auto-jumping and precise collision

With most of the staff at Radical Fish being fans of the action-adventure and the RPG genres, they started rewriting all of the game’s source code (roughly 95%) and essentially built an entirely standalone experience. The game has progressed so much that last year in November, a playable demo of the game was released to the public.

Radical Fish Games are after €80,000 to fund CrossCode on Indiegogo, and currently sit at roughly €15,000 with another 26 days to realize their crowdfunding goals.
