Crimson Desert could be getting DLC after all

Crimson Desert

According to the Pearl Abyss’s latest earnings report, the open world RPG Crimson Desert has been so popular it might get DLC after all.

Crimson Desert generated roughly $179 million in revenue during Q1 2026, despite releasing only near the end of the quarter on March 19. The game’s success pushed Pearl Abyss to a record financial period overall, with total quarterly revenue reaching around $220 million.

The game has reportedly sold more than 5 million copies within 1 month, with sales split almost evenly between PC and consoles including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Perhaps more importantly for the publisher, over 80% of revenue came from North America and Europe, showing that Crimson Desert has connected strongly with Western audiences.

Because of that momentum, Pearl Abyss is now starting to rethink its post-launch strategy. In the financial report, the company confirmed that free updates will continue as planned to maintain player satisfaction and encourage additional sales of the base game.

However in the same earnings report the company also revealed that it is now “exploring various ways to broaden the game to the next level,” and that includes downloadable content.

That statement stands out because it directly contrasts earlier comments from CEO Heo Jin-young back in March, when he suggested there were no concrete plans for paid DLC at the time. The original idea seemed to focus more on expanding the game through free content updates instead of monetized expansions.

Naturally, reactions from players have been mixed. A lot of fans are excited about the possibility of larger story expansions, new regions, additional characters, or deeper gameplay systems. Crimson Desert has already built a strong reputation for its dynamic combat, detailed open world, and frequent updates since launch, including recent additions like ridable lions and tigers.

At the same time, some players remain cautious. Parts of the community still have concerns about story quality, previous censorship-related discussions surrounding the game, and whether paid DLC could hurt some of the goodwill built through the game’s ongoing free support.

There is also growing discussion around what kind of DLC players would actually want to see. Some fans are asking for more narrative-focused content and stronger character development, while others are hoping for expanded customization systems or entirely new regions to explore.

For now, Pearl Abyss says more details will come later once plans are finalized. But considering how successful Crimson Desert has already become financially, it is not surprising to see the studio thinking beyond simple post-launch patches and looking at larger long-term expansion plans instead.

Crimson Desert was released worldwide across Windows PC (via Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 back on March 19th, 2026.
