Cortana is Your Assistant in Windows 10, Windows 7 and 8 Users Get Free Upgrade

Microsoft has confirmed today during their Windows 10 keynote that Halo’s Cortana AI is being integrated in Windows 10.

While the character was integral in the Halo series, the “personal assistant” is going to be running on every Windows 10 device. She’ll learn about you, and she’ll reportedly be able to respond to questions you have, while also letting you control your Windows 10 device with voice commands.

Cortana is also coming with an advanced auto-complete feature, which predicts where you want to navigate, when you begin typing in your Start menu. In case you don’t care for her and her sultry tones or assistance, you can also ask her to “be quiet,” which pauses her functionality.

Finally, the most interesting bit of information (at least to me, as my day job is in the IT field) is that all Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users are getting a free update to Windows 10. The promotion is only available for the first year, as Microsoft is looking to migrate users off previous versions of Windows.

A free update to Windows 10…?nnnStrange move, but ultimately I’ll have to hear about how compatible it is with my favorite games – that happen to be old.

I prefer not to have naked ladies asking me shit while I’m on my computer. Sounds like the perfect dream for people who have her as her waifu, though!

If the offer lasts for a year, then maybe near the end of the year I’ll consider it. But, as with all major OS upgrades, doing it at the start is just too risky.nnI got too many games that are hard enough to get working on Win7, I can’t imagine how bad it’ll be for Win10.nnAlso what happened to 9?

Just a pause? Not a complete shutdown? Seems like she might end up eating resources for people who don’t want to make use of her.nnnnAs for whether or not she’ll be useful or if we need to worry about her acting like spyware remains to be seen I suppose.

I’ll wait and listen to what people are saying about it early on before I make any decisions about my primary PC. If nothing else, though, I can upgrade my laptop from Windows 8.1. This HAS to be better.

the most probable answer is that 10 sounds better, 10 is a nice strong sounding number, MS has fudged number before because of marketing, just look at the xbonennother posibility is that windows phone is 9, dont forget that not long ago they were all “PCs are OOOOVER, Tablets and Phones are the FUUUTURE, OOOOH YEEEAH” (please read with a macho man voice)

If they want a lot of people to adopt the new OS early then I can see it making sense. At the very least, people who have Windows 8 can rid themselves of it since Microsoft was making a big deal of Windows 10 taking the best out of 7 and 8, particularly ditching Metro.

MS was afraid that people would go “windows 9? But didn’t you do windows 95 and 98 already?”nSame reasoning for naming their Xbox 360.

Someone needs to make something like this that has Neptune as my assistant. Hell I’d upgrade the shit to 10 for that. NSA be damned, let them sort out why I spent 10 hour’s arguing which Final Fantasy was the best on a forum.

Free Update is nice, but considering it doesn’t apply to OEM versions, i’m screwed with my laptop running on Win7…

More like Apple’s Siri, or well, Windows phone’s Cortana. Not sure about Cortana, but at least it will help push digital assistants in general.

“Sheu2019ll learn about you” “letting you control your Windows 10 device with voice commands.” “Cortana is also coming with an advanced nauto-complete feature, which predicts where you want to navigate, when nyou begin typing in your Start menu.”nnYeaaaah, after everything with NSA, getting a free “helper” that can hear everything I say and learns my habits is something I am not comfortable with. I even doubt that “Be Quiet” function prevents it from sending data back to Microsoft or anyone else that they send it to.nnDepending on critic feedback, when 7 and 8 die, I might jump to Linux and install Winebox.

DITCHING Metro?!nnHot damn I made some surly comments earlier about it, but if that’s gone I’ll gladly let Cortana sit in the corner.

Actually, theres a shortcut 3rd-parties used so that programs would just search for ‘Windows 9’ rather than the actual version code for Windows 95/98.nnNot that they’re losing sleep over it or anything, skipping to 10 has its silver lining.
