Conservative org that tried banning violent video games goes bankrupt

A prominent right-wing org devoted to banning violent video games and other media has filed for bankruptcy. The organization in question is the Parents Television and Media Council, which has long campaigned against games such as Grand Theft Auto V, as well as adult cartoons like South Park and Family Guy.

Established in 1995 by Republican activist L. Brent Bozell III, The Parents Television Council joined a host of other organizations in the 90s insisting that violent games led to antisocial behavior in young men, often tying these games to school shootings such as Columbine.

During the aforementioned Columbine shootings, the backlash against video games from these organizations was so strong that The New York Times devoted an article about it and sought comments from John Carmack, the co-founder of id Software.

This was due to one of the school shooters having been a big fan Quake, one of id Software’s hit titles. Conservative activists like L. Brent Bozell III joined with infamous attorney Jack Thompson in attempting to get the government to intervene and impose a federal ban on violent video games.

In addition to attacking games, The Parents Television Council tried to get shows like South Park and Family Guy removed from television lineups. Seth Macfarlane, creator of Family Guy, compared the organization to Hitler back in 2008.

During Trump’s first term, representatives from The Parents Television Council met with President Trump to discuss taking action against video games.

While the government did not end up banning games like the organization wanted, the President did release a statement after the meeting stating “We must stop the glorification of violence in our society. This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace.”

Now this has all come to end, as the organization has officially filed for bankruptcy. Meanwhile, L. Brent Bozell III earlier this year left the org due to serve as the ambassador to South Africa under the second Trump administration.
