Boutique film publisher Arrow Video has announced their January 2024 offerings and the most notable release is both Conan the Barbarian and its sequel Conan the Destroyer, both remastered in 4K for the first time.
The brand new Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer 4K remasters were done with scans from the original film negatives, and also include a newly restored and remixed Dolby Atmos surround track for both films.
Both films have also been upgraded with full Dolby Vision / HDR, a new feature commentary by genre historian Paul M. Sammon, as well as all of the bonus content from previous releases on separate standard bluray discs.
Both the 4K set of both films and the standard are available for preorder over on Arrow Video’s online store, Amazon, and other retailers.
Here’s a look at the big collector’s edition for The Conan Chronicles, which includes both films:
Originally released in 1982 and directed by John Milius (who co-wrote it with Oliver Stone), Conan the Barbarian stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in his breakout role as the titular Cimmerian from Robert E. Howard’s legendary writings and novels.
It had mixed reviews at release but remained a box office success, only to become a cult classic in the years that followed with some even suggesting it single-handedly established the “sword and sorcery” genre.
Its sequel, the 1984-released Conan the Destroyer, which once again starred Schwarzenegger as the iconic warrior king Conan alongside new and returning cast like Makoto Iwamatsu as Akiro (the wizard). It also got mixed reviews but alongside its predecessor has achieved cult fame.
Here’s a rundown on the new release:
THIEF. WARRIOR. GLADIATOR. KING.
Ripped from the pages of Robert E. Howard’s beloved pulp stories, 1982’s Conan the Barbarian and its sequel, 1984’s Conan the Destroyer, not only popularized a new subgenre – the sword-and-sorcery film – but also made a cinematic icon of the star playing the titular hero, former bodybuilding sensation Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Conan the Barbarian, from maverick filmmaker John Milius, sees the Cimmerian thief and future king rise up from slavery to become an unparalleled and fearsome warrior, intent on vengeance against the evil snake cult that slaughtered his family long ago, led by the shape-shifting sorcerer Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones). In the sequel, helmed by action veteran Richard Fleischer, Conan finds himself escorting a young princess on a quest for a mythical horn that will awaken a slumbering god, battling an onslaught of evil beasts, wizards and cannibals along the way.
At long last, these glorious odes to the days of high adventure have been restored in stunning 4K with hours of bonus features and heart-racing Atmos remixes that immerse you in the action, accompanied throughout by electrifying music scores by the late Basil Poledouris (RoboCop). If you do not listen… then to hell with you!
