Combat System Trailer for Deck of Ashes

AYGames has released a new trailer detailing the combat system for their upcoming roguelite deckbuilding RPG Deck of Ashes.

Combat is turn-based with the number of cards a player can play during a turn being determined by their mana, and on rare occasions, their health.

Cards are broken down into a series of types, including:

  • Strike Cards: A card that deals instant moderate damage to an opponent

  • Periodic Damage Cards: A card that deals a small amount of damage each turn and wears the opponent down over time

  • Boon Cards: A card that strengthens a character’s toughness

  • Healing Cards: A card that restores a character’s health

  • Hex Cards: A card that casts an effect on an opponent to weaken them over time

While battles are typically one to three foes, some enemies may call in more allies or make themselves and others stronger. The enemies’ class also effects how they typically hinder the player.

While enemies show the cards they will play on their next turn, they may also burn a player’s cards, decrease their stats, apply negative effects to cards, or increase their cost to play.

As the player uses cards or they are targeted by an enemy, the card is “burned” and moved to the titular ‘Deck of Ashes’. Those cards cannot be used again until they are renewed by playing special cards during battle, or while resting after winning a battle. All burned cards may be renewed via the Ash Master in the Camp.

Players have to carefully consider what cards to spend, as they must confront a Ruler at the end of a region. These end-chapter bosses possess unique passive abilities and ultra-powerful cards.

Along with battles, players can encounter events while traveling. These can inflict buffs and debuffs to stats, or gold and card recipes.

Finally, after battles are finished players may spend rest points to restore health, renew cards, and craft new cards.

Deck of Ashes will be available April 11th on Windows PC (via Steam Early Access). The final release is planned for the second half of 2019.
