Colombia Pictures is Producing a Live Action Made in Abyss Film

Made in Abyss

A live-action western adaptation of Made in Abyss is reportedly in the work by Sony’s Colombia Pictures.

According to Deadline, the manga and anime series Made in Abyss is being adapted into a live-action Hollywood film. The series follows a young girl Riko and the robot boy Reg as they descend deep into the mysterious Abyss which her hometown is built around.

Riko’s mother was a famous explorer of the abyss and went missing years ago on a final descent. After receiving a letter from her mother telling her she’s waiting at the bottom, Riko steels her resolve to go to the bottom of the abyss and find her, bringing Reg along the way.

The film is reportedly being adapted by producer Kevin McMullin whose other works include the feature film Low Tide and the short film First Prize. With only a few past works, only time will tell how faithful of an adaptation McMullin is willing to make; however anime fans have been regularly burned in the past by Hollywood’s attempts at adapting anime.

At the time of publishing, no other details are known about this Hollywood adaptation of Made in Abyss and it seems to be very early in production. Keep up to date with us here at Nicchiban as more details are announced.
