Chucklefish’s New Advance Wars-like SRPG WarGroove Officially Announced

Chucklefish have officially titled their new strategy RPG, which they’ve previously described as Fire Emblem meets Advance Wars.

The new game is titled simply WarGroove, and it will launch for the Nintendo Switch sometime this summer. The game is also getting a release on both Xbox One and PC later this year.

Featured above, you can view the debut trailer for the game. The game will support both local and online multiplayer, as well as creating your own levels.

Here’s a rundown, via Chucklefish:

WarGroove is a modern take on the simple yet deep turn-based tactical gameplay popularized in the 2000s by handheld games such as Advance Wars. As big fans of those games we were disappointed to find that nothing in this genre was available on current generation platforms and set out to fill the gap ourselves. WarGroove aims to recreate the charm and accessibility of the titles that inspired it whilst bringing modern technology into the formula. This modern focus allows for higher resolution pixel art, robust online play and deep modding capability, ultimately creating the most complete experience for Advance Wars and TBS fans.

Key Features:

  • Choose from one of 12+ groovy commanders from the 4 warring factions, unlocked as you progress through Story Mode
  • Each commander has a lengthy campaign of their own, exploring their motivations and personality
  • Local and online multiplayer skirmish mode with complete rule customization
  • Local and online competitive and co-op play
  • Easy to use in-game map and campaign editors
  • Beautiful high resolution pixel art battle scenes and charming aesthetic
  • Starbound’s Floran race reappears as a playable faction!
  • A number of new to the genre gameplay features TBA at a later date

The art style’s not really my thing for something trying so hard to mimic Advance Wars.

In fact, this just makes me want more Advance Wars.

Also something is just off when I look at this. It’s like the sprites don’t fit with the background or something. It just looks out of place.

Probably won’t happen anytime soon sadly.

I want a continuation to the Days of Ruin storyline. I much prefer that darker tone to the whimsical mainstay series.

The character portraits look a bit too Tumblr-y for my tastes. Otherwise, it looks… I don’t know, uninspired. I’d rather have a Fire Emblem Waifus: Electric Boogaloo or more Advanced Wars instead.

Also squares and not hexs and move arrows these mechanics are obsolete for PC standards

I thought the whimsical tone was hilariously dark. None of the CEO gave a shit about their troops.

Its just really ugly and un-cohesive.

If you can’t or won’t draw well, the least you can do is try to create cohesion between the elements of your game. Those thick portraits don’t look like something from a gba even though that’s clearly the style they are going for, The trees and other elements look too detailed, giving the impression the characters are drawn in a lower resolution, which could be solved if the outlines weren’t black

The portraits are too detailed too, which doesn’t mesh well with lower pixel resolutions, which is why so many portable games use an anime style. so it just makes it kind of uncanny and shitty phone game-y, and the colors are too desaturated for the whimsical tone.

Compared to this, it just sucks

True enough, but that doesn’t reflect on the story and atmosphere. Besides, I like the slight grimdark atmosphere of the DoR.

    Fuck that mayor, though.

I’d say Days of Ruin and Advance Wars are equally strong. Main series difficulty curve feels more consistent, but Days of Ruin writing puts main series to bed. So many legit scenes between CO’s and soldiers, plus a pretty fucked up universe and much darker story. Days of Ruin does deserve some more games.

I don’t even know why Nintendo isn’t capitalizing on the brand, it’s a perfect fit for the Switch. Cutesy war, no blood, colorful cast of characters, easy to design stages around certain difficulty levels, conducive to playing on the go AND at home… you could sell that to kids and adults alike. But for some reason they haven’t put out a new one since 2008, and this doppelganger title makes me think that they’re not really interested in doing so anytime soon.

This was exactly what I was going to comment. I think it looks quite nice otherwise but those character portraits are a huge turnoff.

  25. Fenrir007
    March 1, 2017 at 8:03 pm

Yeah, I agree with the difficulty. Plus, that anti-tank cannon thing from DoR was too OP and kinda easy to abuse against the PC.

I don’t get it either why they don’t continue the series. Besides, Advanced Wars games don’t seem to be the type that is particularly hard to develop. I mean, it’s certainly easier than a new Zelda game, for example.

  26. Fenrir007
    March 1, 2017 at 8:07 pm

It’s an alternate universe kind of thing and is not meant to replace the mainstay series. The series will continue eventually. Just out of curiosity, though, why do you dislike it?

Is it really so bad that having a port for it but instantly ruins a game system?

  32. NuclearKangaroo
    March 7, 2017 at 7:51 pm

even if it was, is anybody forcing you to play it?

seriously what does it matter if it gets released on switch or not?

  33. SiliconNooB
    March 11, 2017 at 2:45 am

Why don’t you go ahead and point out any one solitary instance of anyone here making that claim.

Until then I’m going to dismiss your comments as strawman sophistry.

  34. Shinoji
    March 14, 2017 at 3:40 pm

You and Travis agree that the Nintendo Direct would be worse if there was an Undertale port. And when Nuclear pointed out that it wasn’t that big a deal, you kept insisting that the game was shit.

The fuck am I supposed to think after reading that?

  35. SiliconNooB
    March 16, 2017 at 11:54 am

The fuck am I supposed to think after reading that?

Well gee, I dunno, maybe that we don’t like the game?

  36. Shinoji
    March 16, 2017 at 3:13 pm

You dislike the game so much that you’ll go apeshit just for the possibly of it getting a port? That the game getting an announcement for the Switch will make the Direct worse?

In that case, you need to grow the hell up.

  37. SiliconNooB
    March 17, 2017 at 11:44 pm

You really can’t help yourself from making strawmen to battle, can you?

Travis said that Underfail would have made the direct worse, and I agreed with him – it would have. Underfail has already been subject to massive amounts of overexposure, and I don’t want to sit through any more of it. But I guess not wanting to sit through that Tumblr-tier bilge is the internet equivalent of ‘going apeshit’.

It is you that needs to grow up. You are being a disingenuous tool in your efforts to shill a bad game.

  38. Shinoji
    March 18, 2017 at 12:37 am

I agree, that fucking game is overrated. But where the fuck did you even THINK that Undertale was coming to the Switch? The fuck does that got do with ANYTHING with the Switch? All you got to do is not go on Tumblr and you already avoid 90% of it.

And PLEASE tell me how I’m being disingenuous; I’m just quoting the bullshit you’ve said. How am I making a strawman? What argument am I making up that you’re not making? You act like this would completely ruin the Switch for you. You obviously didn’t say it, but you sure act like the damn thing would become tainted. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to base my opening statement on that, but you certainly do act how I just described. This isn’t a position I’ve pulled out of my ass, it’s right in my fucking face. And assuming you mean the fucking moronic fandom and their weird-ass crossover fanon bullshit, they have nothing to do with the game itself getting a port. Any game has retarded fans, even good ones. So why does that matter for a console port?

In fact, since you ignored Nuclear, let repeat the question he asked: why does it matter if the Switch got a port for it? And where did you think that this fear of a port was justified when no one, not even Toby Fox, ever mentioned it?

  39. SiliconNooB
    March 18, 2017 at 7:17 am

Did you even read any of the comments before you decided to add your two cents? Can you read? Why are you trying to pretend that me and Travis have said things that we clearly haven’t?

Are you commenting from the Berenstein universe?

  40. Shinoji
    March 18, 2017 at 1:33 pm

What am I saying that you clearly not said yourself? You yourself admitted that you think the Direct would’ve been worse with it. And I said that you ACT like this ruins the console, not that you IN FACT said it. I even pointed it out, saying that “You obviously didn’t say it”; so what am I supposedly strawmanning? You actually had a good point saying it before, since I jumped to conclusions about it before, but now it makes no sense. What happened in those eight hours in between, did you huff paint and forgot how to correctly use that word?

And would it kill you to answer those two questions? I feel like those are the only worthwhile things I’ll get out of you and your ridiculous attempts to keep saying I’m making a strawman.

  41. SiliconNooB
    March 18, 2017 at 3:44 pm

You don’t think it’s a bit of a leap to take my assertion that Underfail would have made the Direct worse, and interpret that as me suggesting that it would completely ruin the console? Really? Totally not a strawman tho! XD

  42. Shinoji
    March 18, 2017 at 3:48 pm

It’s not that much of a leap when you get this worked up about it. It’s not just about how you don’t want it do be on a Direct, it’s about how fucking vehement you are about this game. It borders on silly, considering you keep calling it Underfail. It’s like calling someone a Nintendrone, Sony-pony, or Xbot. It’s fucking childish.

And why did you ignore everything else I said? Why won’t you answer those two questions?

  43. Shinoji
    March 18, 2017 at 3:55 pm

At this point I’m willing to just jump ship from this conversation, you’re ignoring parts of my argument, and keep insisting that I’m strawmanning you, even though I’ve corrected my statement about how you just ACT like it’ll ruin the system instead of flat-out saying it.

  44. SiliconNooB
    March 18, 2017 at 4:12 pm

I dislike Underfail. I dislike it a lot. But it is a ridiculous act of strawmanning to suggest that its mere existence would effect my opinion of the Switch – and it is even sillier to suggest the same of Travis, since he is the biggest Nintendo fan on this site.

  45. SiliconNooB
    March 18, 2017 at 4:15 pm

LOL, did you just reply to yourself?

  46. Shinoji
    March 18, 2017 at 4:17 pm

Yeah, I felt there was no point to just reply to you twice when I could’ve just edited my previous post, yet I figured this seperate paragraph was unrelated to my other post to add on to it; so I replied to myself to indicate that I’m going on a different train of thought on this.

  47. SiliconNooB
    March 18, 2017 at 4:24 pm

Yea, but I don’t get the notification if you reply to yourself, so I might have never seen it.

  48. Shinoji
    March 18, 2017 at 4:25 pm

I never said that the Switch would affect his opinion on it, we both
know he’s practically in love with the thing. I was only talking to you when I said that, not Travis. Otherwise I’d have replied to him saying the same thing.

good thing you aren’t as moronic as I thought you were to think something like that,
because your attitude from before really seemed like you were that
pissed off about something so minor in the long run. (I may sound backhanded when I say this, but I’m actually glad that you aren’t silly enough to drop the Switch because the idea of an Undertale Switch port.)

While you’re more level-headed about this, could you answer my second question: where the hell did the idea of a Switch port cross your mind?

  49. Shinoji
    March 18, 2017 at 4:26 pm

True. Dumbfuck move on my part.

  50. SiliconNooB
    March 18, 2017 at 6:33 pm

because your attitude from before really seemed like you were that

But why would I even be pissed about something that isn’t happening? This was only ever hypothetical at best.
