Legendary game designer and former company boss Chris Metzen has returned to his roots, confirming he has rejoined Blizzard Entertainment.

While the full extent of Metzen’s new role isn’t clear, he has returned to the Warcraft universe as a Creative Advisor to the World of Warcraft team, initially at least.

From there, Blizzard teases that Metzen’s work “will expand to other projects across this growing franchise.” Chris Metzen previously retired from the industry to spend time with his family, but it didn’t take long for him to return.

Back in 2020, he launched his own tabletop-focused company Warchief Gaming, and now he’s reconnected with the massive Warcraft franchise he helped create way back in the 90s.

“It is with great joy that I announce Chris Metzen has joined the Warcraft Leadership Team as Creative Advisor,” Warcraft General Manager John Hight said. “Chris’s focus initially will be on World of Warcraft, then his work will expand to other projects across this growing franchise. Chris was one of the original team members working on the Warcraft universe back when it began in 1994, and we are so happy to be reuniting him with the world he helped create.”
