There’s something genuinely sweet about seeing a small indie developer celebrate the little victories instead of pretending every project needs to become the next massive Steam hit overnight.
That’s exactly what happened recently with Asuka Watanabe, a solo Japanese game developer behind the cozy RPG ChokoNana. After the game’s release in 2024 on Steam and 2025 for Switch, Watanabe shared her excitement online after receiving a glowing review from an experienced Steam player who had already played more than 900 games and written hundreds of reviews over the years.
For a solo creator, that kind of feedback clearly meant a lot. Instead of trying to become a giant 100-hour RPG packed with endless systems, ChokoNana intentionally focuses on smaller, more relaxing experiences. The entire concept revolves around doing “a little bit” of everything.
You explore short maps, discover small secrets, level up characters and weapons, and follow a lighthearted story featuring a silver-haired protagonist alongside adorable cat-like companions. The tone stays cozy and approachable throughout, almost feeling designed for anyone who just want something calming to unwind with after a long day.
What makes the story even more encouraging is that this was Watanabe’s debut title, and it already exceeded her personal expectations financially. According to her posts, ChokoNana generated nearly $3,000 in early sales, which might not sound massive compared to blockbuster releases, but for a first solo project, that’s still a meaningful achievement.
She has also started teasing updates about her next project, RyneArca, while sharing development progress and voice actor information online.
Another nice detail is that ChokoNana includes full English support, which helps make the game accessible beyond Japan and gives international players a chance to discover it more easily on Steam and recently Nintendo Switch.
