Following their debut trailer, Nippon Ichi Software has revealed another video and some new details for their upcoming PlayStation Vita puzzle game, htoL #NiQ: Hotaru no Nikki.
The video, featured above, doesn’t show off much action, and instead details the story of Mion, a curious young girl who mysteriously wakes up inside dark ruins littered with debris. Emphasis is placed on the twig-like branches that stick out from her head, and a strange pattern that is engraved on her body.
Two fireflies accompany her, one comprised of light, one of darkness, and both will help guide Mion outside of the ruins. However, each firefly seems to have its own, individual intentions. Shadow monsters hide and roam in the darkness, and attack and consume Mion if they notice her. Later in the game, you encounter a large shadow who will chase Mion down regardless. Mion has no means of defending herself, so it’s up to you, the player, to guide her along the right course and help prevent this fate.
The ruins are littered with abandoned machines, flora, and fauna that block your path, as well as, more gruesomely, the bodies of dead children who failed to escape. The children look similar to Mion, but lack the patterns on their bodies.
Throughout your journey, you’ll sometimes “Memory Fragments”, and when Mion touches these sprout-like objects, you get a small look at her past. If you collect all of them, you’ll be able to discover the truth behind Mion’s past, and of the ruins.
Hotaru no Nikki is coming out on PlayStation Vita in Japan on June 19th.
