CD Projekt Red already “thinking about” more Witcher games for the future

Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red confirmed The Witcher 4 was in development. The upcoming game will be using Unreal Engine 5 rather than their in-house engine which developed the other Witcher titles thus far.

In the teaser images for their announcement, there was the tagline of “a new saga begins”, which indicated this being the start of a new longer story in The Witcher franchise.

Now it’s been basically confirmed there will be more titles in this latest saga for the popular RPG series.

A new report (via Eurogamer) from an earnings call for CD Projekt Red transcribed a question asked to clarify on what they meant in that tagline. CD Projekt president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed what had already been hinted at.

“[…] The first saga was three games […] we are in pre-production of the first game from the second Witcher saga.” Kiciński said, explaining their plans. He further went on to say they were “thinking about more than one game.”

So, it’s possible they are already in the stages of working on a story which may span across multiple games set in the world of The Witcher.

Of course, as they are in production for the first title, a hypothetical second game is not in the works right now. Their comparison to the first saga may also hint towards there being another trilogy for this next saga for The Witcher.

Another trilogy makes sense, as the franchise is easily CD Projekt Red’s biggest series both critically and finically. Their latest in the mainline series, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has sold over 28 million copies worldwide alone. The game is also expected to be getting a next-gen port by the end of this year.
