Cave Story finally adds console version content to PC version in new update

Cave Story

Publisher Nicalis and developer Studio Pixel released a big new update for Cave Story on PC that finally adds new content seen in the game’s console ports to owners of the original game on PC.

The new update for Cave Story+ is now available for PC (via Steam). While the game was originally released back in 2004 for PC, the Cave Story+ version was developed and released by Nicalis in 2011. To date the game has been ported to the Wii, DS, 3DS, and Switch.

The update includes all the extra modes from the 2010 WiiWare version, as well as a remastered soundtrack, a visuals toggle (classic, WiiWare, and the 3DS version), and the previously exclusive Wind Fortress level. Read the full patch notes for the release here.

Here’s a rundown on the new update:

Oh Yeaah!!! The massive Cave Story Steam update today, adds a ton of new features and upgrades including 2-player mode, mod support, enhanced visuals, and much more!

This update finally brings all of the later console-version additions to the Steam version of the game, including 2-player co-op mode. Venture back into the caves – but this time, bring a friend!

You’ll see many visual elements have been overhauled with this update, with the addition of animated dialogue portraits for all characters, enhanced dynamic lighting and water effects, improved environment shading, widescreen support, and more.

There’s plenty of love for the sound in here along with the visuals, with a total of four different versions of the game’s iconic soundtrack to choose from, as well as a new Jukebox feature to help you enjoy them all in one convenient place.

As for gameplay, you’ll find a number of helpful tweaks and gameplay improvements have been made. A few spots have had their difficulty minorly tuned or streamlined (like stacking puppies!) plus a Sand Pit Challenge level has been added to the game’s bonus challenge mode.

Even if you think you’ve already seen all that Cave Story has to offer, with this update, the game now supports player-created mods for custom graphics packs, challenges, soundtracks and more.

And that’s not even everything. Check the patch notes below for the complete list of changes – and happy exploring!
