Throwback Slavic metroidvania game Catmaze comes to consoles in September

Catmaze

Developer Redblack Spade has teamed up with indie publisher Ratalaika Games to bring Catmaze to consoles later this week.

Catmaze originally released on Windows PC, Linux, and Mac via Steam back in 2018, and will finally be coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series XIS on September 9th.

The game is a retro-inspired metroidvania loosely based on Slavic folklore. Catmaze follows Alesta, a young witch that wishes to bring her mother back from the dead. To do this she enlists the help of cats, who are often considered to be mystical beings that link the worlds of the living and the deceased.

Alesta will gain new abilities and spells as you progress through the game. Alesta will explore enchanted forests, haunted mazes, and humble country villages populated with a variety of creatures from Eastern European folklore. As with most metroidvanias, Alesta’s growing list of abilities will allow you to reach new areas and secrets that were previously inaccessible.

You can find a rundown for Catmaze below:

Cats have always been the link between the world of Yav and the world of Nav, and for this knowledge they were awarded nine lives. What will it cost for one of them – Cat Bayn – to make an exception and change the balance just once on behalf of the young sorceress Alesta’s mother? Mysterious creatures from Slavic myths carefully keep their secrets in the magical forests and dense thickets that have become home to boggart, kikimora, anchutkas and mermaids. In the whirlwind of the adventure, their secrets will be revealed, hidden paths will become visible and the road between worlds will be intertwined.
