Indie developer Warren Smith has been working on a Castlevania-inspired story-driven action RPG named Dark Flame, and the game is looking quite reminiscent of the series’ Symphony of the Night-era titles.
The game is currently in pre-alpha, and has already been greenlit on Steam. There’s also a playable demo of the game’s alpha build over on the IndieDB for you to check out.
In Dark Flame, instead of looking to vanquish evil, you play as a knight who is constantly being drawn to darkness and evil.
Smith is promising a challenging game built with “tailored gameplay,” spanning “large, hand-crafted environments,” and an “armoire of weapons, armor, and magic.”
Here are the game’s key features:
- Large, Themed Environments: Action-packed Metroidvania-style gameplay with hand crafted rooms and environments.
- Determine Your Destiny: Choose whether to persevere with good faiths, or succumb to the darkness in this diverse storyline.
- Customizable Gameplay: Unique level-up system with unlockable talents and spells.
- Original Soundtrack: inspired from old “-vania” titles.
- Hidden Rooms and Secrets: Large, maze-like environments consisting of upgrades and hidden items!
- Progressive Storylines: Obtain new powers to progress through the game and learn of the darkness that dwells within the realm.
- Hidden Spells: Some weapons and items contain an unlockable power via specific inputs.
A release date for Dark Flame isn’t confirmed, but Smith is looking to hopefully bring the game to Playstation 4 and Xbox One as well.
What do you guys think about the game being similar to Castlevania, in style, mechanics, and animations?
