Developers Blocksmith & co. and Thirdverse have announced a new Captain Tsubasa game based on blockchain technology, titled Captain Tsubasa: Rivals.
The game’s “whitepaper” confirms it will release for smartphones, and will include 2 game modes: a single player campaign battling against rivals in an original story, and a PvP mode against other users.
They say the game’s theme is “developing and strengthening your one-of-a-kind NFT character while competing for items against your rivals”. Other features include items drops reminiscent of those found in gacha titles. It also appears that the in-game currency will be in the form of cryptocurrency, at least given that it is called “$TSUBASAUT”.
The soccer-themed series began with a popular manga, which debuted back in 1981. The series went on to spawn multiple anime series and films, along with many video game adaptations following the game’s storyline revolving around soccer and the titular character.
Recent gaming titles to come to the franchise include the recently announced Captain Tsubasa: Ace, which is also coming to mobile devices. Meanwhile Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions came out on major consoles and PC to much success.
