Capcom vs. SNK 3 Was Reportedly in Development

While Marvel vs. Capcom has been typically the most popular crossover fighter for Capcom, they had another mashup fighter with various SNK Corporation icons, appropriately titled Capcom vs. SNK. It spawned two games and while both titles were well-received and successful, yet another crossover between the two companies hasn’t come since.

Now, a recent interview with former King of Fighters series director Toyohisa Tanabe over on Capcom’s Shadaloo C.R.I website (via Shoryuken) has led us to believe Capcom was actually developing a third Capcom vs. SNK title.

Capcom developer Takayuki Nakayama was chatting with Tanabe over past works when the subject of the shelved title Capcom Fighting All Stars came up.

“Right before Fighting All Stars got started, there was another fighting game that got stopped during development…” Tanabe said. Nakayama responded with “Ah, that would be ****** ** *** *!”

While the title of the game is censored, if you fill in the blanks Capcom vs. SNK 3 fits perfectly. Tanabe was brought on to develop Fighting All Stars after SNK Corporation filed for bankruptcy in October of 2001, only to work on another fighter at Capcom.

Considering the fact that Capcom vs. SNK 2 had just come out in August of that year, it makes sense they would move on to develop another sequel to release once the second title had run its course in arcades and on home consoles.

Nakayama also confirmed he had seen designs and models for the unconfirmed project.

Tanabe also noted that they had planned to reuse assets from the mystery title in Capcom Fighting All Stars, with a secret character from his old company reportedly planned as a guest appearance.

The above silhouette, referred to only as “***”, was teased as said character. This is very likely Kyo from SNK’s King of Fighters.

Capcom vs. SNK was always one of my favorite fighting game franchises, let alone crossover fighters. Now that SNK Corporation is for intents and purposes returned to form and making a slew of fighting games, could we see another crossover between both fighting game titans? Only time will tell.
