EVO 2022 had SNK and Capcom share new posters reminiscent of the greatest fighting game(s) of all time, Capcom vs. SNK 1 and 2. Now, we’ve learned both companies want to do a revival.
Asked if either company is still interested in bringing back the greatest fighting game in the history of gaming, SNK boss Yasuyuki Oda said (via VGC): “Definitely in the future, that’s something that I think everybody on all sides, in both parties, are interested in making a reality.”
Oda mentioned the posters they did at EVO and said the incredible response prompted the companies to talk about a follow up again.
“Especially after we saw the reaction to the (EVO posters)… it helped us reconfirm that that is probably one of the most wanted things from the fighting game community across the entire world,” he said.
Capcom vs. SNK 3 was reportedly in development just prior to SNK filing for bankruptcy all those years ago – with lots of its core staff moving on to Capcom to work on fighting games there.
The company boss was then asked if they have anything particular in the works with a Capcom vs. SNK followup.
“We haven’t really talked in detail with anybody at Capcom about it. It might have come up as a vague comment,” Oda said. “However, we have a lot of experience [in crossovers] with things like Akuma and Geese in Tekken, Terry [Bogard] in Fighting EX Layer, Terry in Smash Bros., and Baiken in Samurai Showdown…”
“But recently, we haven’t actually done anything with Capcom, even on character collaboration stuff. So that poster [at Evo], in our sense, was the first step towards maybe something like that happening in the future.”
Lastly, when asked if fans will have to wait another two decades for another crossover game, Oda said “20 years is definitely too long for me. We’ll try and get it done in 10!”
