Cairn was received with a flood of positive reviews upon release. A heart-stopping indie all about scaling increasingly daunting cliff faces delivered exactly where it intended, with all the free solo climbing action that one could reasonably stuff behind the monitor of a PC. But developers The Game Bakers aren’t finished adding to their breakout hit just yet.
With the team’s recent spot on the French Direct showcase, the development team shared that, on top of the recent quality-of-life update, the upcoming DLC pack — the game’s first batch of post-launch content — would include a free roam mode where climbers can practice particularly tricky holds and routes to better master the peak.
The title will be receiving DLC subtitled On the Trail in the summer of 2026, and better yet, this bonus content will arrive entirely free of charge and will be the first episode in a series of free DLCs.
You can pick up Cairn on Steam and PS5, which is currently 20% off thanks to the ongoing French Direct promotion.
Here’s a message from the development team from their original DLC announcement:
Are you itching to get back on the walls? Do you miss the fresh mountain air already? We for sure do, and that’s why we’re already at work on Cairn – On the Trail: Deep Water, Cairn’s first free DLC. It brings new climbing spots, fresh problems, but doesn’t change what made Cairn so special.
On the Trail is a series of free DLCs bringing you new climbing spots and challenges. Find your route freely, solve fresh climbing problems, and explore new iconic locations as you follow the trail of a legendary climber. On the Trail – Deep Water, the first of the series, brings you 3 new climbing spots, and introduces water soloing: you can now climb over water, without the consequences when falling!
There might be a few more surprises in the DLC, but we will share more later on…
