Publisher Neowiz and developer GAMFS N announced Brown Dust II is canceling its Steam release, forcing the team to consider other options.
Though the game had been preparing for a Steam release and was just about to launch on the platform, the team had been quietly battling Valve over releasing it as is, though that was apparently impossible due to Steam’s “policy requirements.”
“We have been preparing for a Steam launch for a long time, but during coordination with the platform’s policy requirements, we encountered an issue that cannot be reasonably resolved with the current version of the game,” the team said in a statement. “After extensive internal discussion, we have decided not to proceed with a Steam release.”
While the exact reasoning behind Valve’s “policy requirements” wasn’t given, it’s likely from increasing pressure from payment processors for Steam–the largest PC gaming distributor–to ban games that are potentially damaging to Mastercard and other brands.
As such, the racy action RPG won’t release for Steam at all if it seemingly had to censor content. At the time of writing, the game had been added to over 200,000 wishlists, so it was probably going to be popular on Steam as well.
While the team seeks another home for the bodacious RPG on PC, Brown Dust II has been available globally for iOS (via the App Store) and Android (via Google Play).
Here’s the full message from the team:
Full Burst RPG —BrownDust2.
First of all, we would like to sincerely thank everyone who has been looking forward to our Steam release.
We have been preparing for a Steam launch for a long time, but during coordination with the platform’s policy requirements, we encountered an issue that cannot be reasonably resolved with the current version of the game.
After extensive internal discussion, we have decided not to proceed with a Steam release.
We deeply regret disappointing all of you who were waiting and cheering us on.
We considered multiple options to make the release possible, but in order to preserve the game’s core direction and overall quality, we came to the conclusion that making the necessary adjustments at this time would not be appropriate.
For everyone who supported the Steam release, we will still be distributing all previously announced rewards, including:
Community event rewards related to Steam, and Wishlist milestone rewards
These will be sent out after the December 16 update.
We are currently exploring alternative PC platforms that can provide a better environment for BrownDust2, and once a direction is confirmed, we will share the details with you as soon as possible.
We sincerely apologize for not being able to meet your expectations this time, and we will do our best to repay your support with a more stable and satisfying service.
Thank you.
