We are at the start of an indie horror gaming renaissance. Everywhere you look, from games about killer animatronics (Five Nights At Freddy’s) to fishing simulation games with cosmic horror elements (Dredge), there is something for everyone.
So far, though, I haven’t stumbled across any horror game that uses a bustling college as the backdrop to the gameplay. (I’ve seen a few where the protagonist visits an abandoned school, of course, such as Gylt) That is, until I stumbled across Blue June on Kickstarter. I backed it because the premise was intriguing to me.
Blue June is an upcoming 2.5 story driven horror adventure with exploration and puzzle gameplay. Having been successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter during the summer of 2021, it appears we are getting close to big news on its release.
One-woman developer team Tiny Dodo recently took to the comments section of the Kickstarter to assure backers that she is “very close to getting a complete beta build ready,” as well as promising to share exciting news in the coming days.
Here is a rundown on the game, plus its latest trailer:
Blue June is a 2.5D story-driven adventure game with elements of exploration, puzzle solving, stealth and horror. Play as June, a student of the prestigious Rose Hill Academy, and uncover the truth that lies within her mind.
STORY
A young girl is tormented by terrifying nightmares, slowly pulling her into the past. Before long, the real world begins to feel strangely foreign. The colors, sounds, and smells are no longer the same. With every passing day, the dream world seeps into the real one and soon, she might not be able to tell the difference…
GAMEPLAY
Players will navigate the world as June and interact with her nightmares, people and objects. Puzzles will require a keen eye as they scale with the intensity of June’s nightmares and delusions. Although the main story path will require casual effort, collectibles and secrets or hidden paths may not be obvious at first.
