Nidhogg devs announce platforming action game Blood Dungeon

Blood Dungeon

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Vampire Survivors and Spelunky had a very chaotic child together, newly announced game Blood Dungeon could give you the answer.

Developed by Messhof, the studio best known for Nidhogg, Blood Dungeon combines automatic shooting with fast-paced platforming. Instead of worrying about aiming, you’ll spend your time wall-climbing, dodging, and parkouring around arenas packed with monsters while trying to survive as long as possible.

The progression system looks equally addictive. You collect blood and resources during runs before spending earned bones on permanent upgrades at the Bone Shop. Over time, you’ll unlock new characters, weapons, arenas, and abilities that make future attempts more manageable.

It features nine playable characters, more than 100 weapons and upgrades, over 100 enemy types, and a soundtrack packed with energetic drum-and-bass tracks. If you’re curious, a playable demo is already available on Steam, giving you a chance to see whether this unusual blend of survival action and platforming clicks with you.

“I like to sketch ideas in Game Maker once in a while to get them out of my head,” said Messhof co-founder Mark Essen in a press release. “While it’s been a while since I’ve done the art for a Messhof project, I still enjoy working in 2D for fun side projects. This game started as a little weekend project that I shared with friends and lent itself to being something I could scratch at over the years as a way to wind down at night. The lack of pressure and small windows of time that defined 90% of the development kept it fun and drove a lot of the design decisions. I had a little $50 tablet with a screen and I did a lot of animation in the car if I had to wait around for something or other.”

Blood Dungeon launches later this summer for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
