Blizzard Aggressively Shutting Down Porn of Overwatch Game

If you’ve been following recent game releases, you’ll know that the talk of the town at the moment is Blizzard’s Overwatch. This is a game so popular that when it entered open beta on May 5th, search results increased by over 800% on the porn website Pornhub.

Now, it appears that Blizzard are more than aware of this fact, and have begun to send out DMCA’s for Overwatch porn in an effort to shut it down.

To be specific, they are targeting the Source Film Maker related porn videos, as it was made apparent by Reddit user spornm in a post detailing a video of his removed, as well as a GIF made by a rival removed.

An interesting note is that the company who filed the DMCA for one of the videos goes by the name Irdeto, which could be a company Blizzard hired in order to remove all the videos.

Legally speaking, Blizzard have every right to do DMCA these SFM videos, seeing as they essentially rip the models straight from the game. Whether or not if this is the right thing for Blizzard is up for debate, as there actions could inadvertently lead to a rise in demand for Overwatch SFM porn.

Is it actually Blizzard? I saw Activision’s name being thrown around more.

Either way, good luck with this. Why not try sweeping a dirt road while you’re at it?

I fucking fapped to overwatch sfm and they are taking that away from me A POTENTIAL CONSUMER if it wasn’t for their ANTI CONSUMER practices as of late. first they make diablo 3 for pc online only, then they remove a fan created server, then they take away a fucking taunt because ONE sjw fatass wanted it gone and now this? if you STILL support blizzard after all of this, you do not deserve to be playing games.

Also, good luck getting rid of it all. It’s an impossible act! The porn must have been uploaded to many different websites already, and more and more will be made!

Porn is one of the Internet’s constant forces. To try and remove that force is foolish.

Shit, I’m actually wondering how many SFM dudes are on an under-the-table payroll, given that Blizzard/Acti gave no red fucks about the various sex mods for WoW.

If these creators are really that intent making this, then they can create their own custom models to use instead of ripping Blizzard’s models (And, yeah, I know, that does take much more time to even do, but it solves a lot more problems in the long run).

Not in my opinion, the original one was far sexier because that completely gave a full view of her ass.

You’ll find that the new pose is the ONLY way they could’ve hidden most of her ass for an over-the-shoulder pose.

Just because the new pose is based on a pin-up model doesn’t mean it has more sex appeal. This is of course based on an individual’s taste, but far too many people have let the pin-up model aspect persuade them into thinking it automatically means sexier.

And at the end of the day, Blizzard caved and had to change it. That’s a fact.

I know right? Shitloads of work must’ve went into producing those sprites. High-resolution 2D sprites take a long time to draw (I know because I’m from the MUGEN community), especially when there’s several hundred or thousands of sprites for one character.

A game like Skullgirls would be the embodiment of artistic freedom of expression and creavity, as it is also Mike Zaimont’s vision and dream come true.

But even that’s fallen foul of SJW feminist pricks. I guess Mike desperately needed the money and thought he could get it from these morons.

I’ve been told that whenever Skullgirls is present at a convention or some gaming event, a lot of it’s fans are females – they are fans of the characters, but NOT the game itself. I imagine it’s these prudes that demand the censorship to “improve” the game.

They don’t like it because it’s drawing more attention than the actual game does. This is also in an area where even if it’s legal, nobody will pursue it because no money is exchanging hands and it’s porn. There’s porn of everything.

Even moreso, Japan serves as a fine example of derivative work. Doujin circles regularly draw inspiration from and use characters from established media to make porn of every fashion and they sell these at conventions or DLsite.

What does Activision really have to gain here? Even if the porn wasn’t drawing more attention than the game…well..this is just vain, and Activision are bullies. Nobody is going to side with them and it’s not going to get any of this stuff removed.

Open container laws are open areas for the public, the comparison makes no sense. The people that searched for Overwatch porn knew exactly what, and where, they were looking for when the game came out.

This impulse to look for porn of video game characters wouldn’t exist weren’t there an impulse to look at porn in the first place. Sounds very much like an addictive behavior.

Blizzard’s ability to fight a tidal wave is irrelevant, which is why I’m not even remotely getting passioned about this sudden surge to “protect their copyright”. Two solid logical reasons they’re doing this is some BS legal red tape, and publicity.

Normalfags actually stretches a fair bit of distance in my experience. For every person not buying into Uncharted 4 for Naughty Dog’s shitty behavior, for example, there’s another 20 or 30 people around fully-intent on getting it and riding the multiplayer until they get bored (their words, not mine). And they’re teens, grown, or kids whose parents aren’t exactly picky about what they purchased (Or are we suddenly forgetting the deluge of 10 – 13 year olds all over name-your-FPS-here?). All walks of life, man. The requirement is basically them looking at something like Neptune and thinking “wtf do I wanna play a game about a little girl for?”

Those numerous groups aren’t going to blink at OW because most of OW is designed after shit you see regularly in comics. They’ll buy with zero hesitation just on that alone.

When Zootopia came out, Disney never tried cracking down on Rule 34 for that. Probably because they knew it was gonna be a huge hit with furries, meaning more ticket sales. I’m just saying, if your game is getting tons of Rule 34 fanart, that usually means your property is considered a hit. Don’t fight your fans, they’re actually doing you a favor. Wow,Blizzard… are we butthurt about Rule 34? This is the internet, there was porn of Overwatch when you made a promo of this game, it is simply the nature of the internet. Nothing is safe of Rule 34, not even politician.

But like a small kid, you rampaged about your toys. Guess what, this DMCA take down… it will spawn EVEN MORE because of it. You should have done the same as Disney with Zootropia; they just accept the fact than Furries would rip this one a new one in for of porn. But you had to throw rocks at the lion. Now the lion is awake… and it will eat you up!

As far as I can say, I was rather impressed about how fast there was a CG porn version of Overwatch, but then again, there was from Mass Effect and other games when they were released. All I can say, Blizzard, is to cool down and let it happen. Trust me, it like real sex; it hurts only once, but the more you do it, the better it gets… oh wait, no. That was about killing, wasn’t it? Ah… who cares. The damage is done in form of the DMCA and this will deliever a nasty and horrible backlash.

Sorry to tell you, but porn art like these are just like a parody of the original works and falls under Fair Use. This is the same rule that allows you to make a parody, a review or educate abot a movie, a game or music. And about the fact that they used the models from the game… this falls under Fair Use as well since critics uses the original movies to review them. In this case, it is a bland parody of what those characters are standing for; out of proportion of their real being.

Oh and “brain damage” through porn? Really? What is this… the late 1800, where people said that masturbation can make you blind and give you syphilis and only circumcision can heal this as like protect you from anal cancer, stupidity or dementia?

Not all models are ripped directly from the game, precisely because of DMCAs.
Models are recreated based on pictures, making them no different than fanart/parody. The only problem I see is that the recreations end up too similar to the original and Blizzard could have a case in saying that it confuses costumers, which is easily gotten around by deliberately altering some details.

Solid? I think I’ve already told you why they’re both not solid.

Starcraft 2 and WoW also have SFM artists using ripped off models, that already kills your “legal” argument.

As for your “publicity” argument, no, there is such a thing as bad publicity. If you only want popularity, that’s fine and dandy, but that does not mean you will also get sales.

I’m certain no one started buying cancer drugs when that CEO priced it up, becoming incredibly infamous with how much of a psychopath he is.

What shitty behavior? No Doughnut Drake? What a bad example.

” And they’re teens, grown, or kids whose parents aren’t exactly picky about what they purchased”

If Naughty Dog would have done something shitty and was popular because of that, they would not gain sales, they would lose sales.

“They’ll buy with zero hesitation just on that alone.”

So they’ll buy anyway, you didn’t prove your point then…

Side note: No, my point is that teens REALLY like porn. Also hentai in particular (which overwatch falls into) has become the second most searched porn category outside lesbian sex (then “milf” 3th and teen 4th), but I guess we are getting off track with that discussion and those statistics.

Fine, let me help you then… Which type of publicity do you think is actually the best type of publicity and makes people actually buy a game?

    Word of mouth.

That’s it, word of mouth is the best type of publicity, it has always been that way, since we’re prone to listen less to officials, we will listen to our friend, mother, brother, or even your neighbor or randoms on the Internet, since we know they tend to not have hidden interests to make us buy something (most people are not shills, we’re most trustful towards INDIVIDUALS rather than ads or corporations, since they’re less personal) it usually tends to be truthful and done by people that already have the product too.

It’s slow, mind you, but it gets you sales.

Now, how does word of mouth spread? Well, besides talking to people on social media and shit, it also spreads through fan art (fan art is actually FASTER than the simple word of mouth).

What Blizzard is doing is stifling such fan art publicly. Pornography in itself is incredibly popular, especially with males.

So now you’re stifling free advertisement with paid actions (do you think what they’re doing is free?), angering people, and actually not doing anything worthwhile because porn will still be made, although, they are deterring some individuals from continuing such type of work (which is also a bad thing).

How is that not bad publicity at this point? It’s not only bad publicity but it also hinders good publicity. You’ll be known, but you’ll be known for reasons like “They’re censorious bastards that like to kill the fans creativity.”, why would anyone look at this and say “I’ll now buy the game.”?

  298. chaoguy
    chaoguy
    May 29, 2016 at 12:37 pm

Advertisers have long got it into their head that if you hear about a product over and over and over and over, eventually it tempts you into trying it (since it’s been on your mind. Explained better in the picture below).

However, that only works with some people, those who rarely impulse buy aren’t affected.

I agree that most Gamers won’t be affected by this advertising scam (same as the one person who wanted Tracer’s ass gone) and will be driven off by Blizzard’s actions, but I wonder if Blizzard is trying to court the casual consumer (more likely to impulse by) and the SJWs (“look, we are progressive! We hate sexuality!”)?

The only good thing to come out of this is another nail in Blizzard’s coffin for credibility, and the endless “character team FPS” games that’ll come out might have some good ones.

Yes, I also support the notion that they’re doing this out of sheer ignorance. But I disagree that this type of advertising, negative or not (since we’re talking about “repeated advertising”) will somehow force people into buying and/or trying the game.

Even if there is some truth to it, I find it absurd because this costs them a lot of money for mostly a negative change… Conditioning is rather meh.

It has more to do with Hollywood movies making romance, love, relationships and marriage seem easy and that once you get these things you’ll live happily ever after. Never mind that yeah it might be easy to date someone if you’re even slightly compatible, but actually living with someone is completely different from going to the movies or dinner dates with someone. People should rarely get married before living with their boyfriend or girlfriend, because once you live with someone you see all their bad habits and behavior, instead of their best they show on dates.

Lol, gotta love that publicity machine. XD I hate that they are doing it but it is kind of a no brainer from blizzards perspective. It shows a concerted effort to protect your assets and IP. If someone accuses you of promoting the porn or letting your trademarked assets go public domain you have a legal paper trail as a shield, then you have the side benefit of publicity as this puts overwatch in the news again. The people who are saying that reminding you of the product again and again are doesn’t work are delusional. Step #1 to buying a product is knowing the damn product exists. Repetition helps things stay in memory. You can’t buy overwatch if you don’t remember overwatch exists so multiple avenues to get overwatch stuck in your memory is ideal. Lastly this campaign is likely to turn anyone off who would have bought overwatch anyway. Next to no one is die hard enough to cancel their purchase because blizz told people to stop ripping their models to make sfm pron. Especially since we all know this will do jack all ito stop it.

When you copy something that is being sold – that’s stealing. You got something without paying and you intended to do so. Same as sneaking into a movie theater or blowing through a toll on the highway.

The whole “but you didn’t deprive them of a physical object so it’s not theft” is a babbling smokescreen no one in their right mind is fooled by, and a pointless quibbling over terminology. You may not have committed legal theft, but you still stole.

“Having tons of porn based on it is not sign of a game being a quality game, to understand what I’m saying here just look at all the Sonic porn out there and how shitty the games from that franchise is to understand just how faulty your statement is.”
The rule retard, is that if it exist there will be porn of it, especially if its something popular. Overwatch is popular right now so its a given that someone will produce porn of it to gain a bit of internet fame and the chance to make money off it through patreon and commissions.
Blizzard actively shutting down online porn sites who hosts content they have produced or content which is based off their copyrighted and trademarked content which has been uploaded without Blizzards permission for the sole purpose of making money through direct sales or AD generated income is perfectly legal dipshit.

Actually no, they don’t have every right to file DMCA’s, even if the models are ripped from the game, as long as the creators of the content(in this case porn) aren’t actively trying to sell the videos, pictures, or gifs. Porn has always parodied pop culture, one need look as far back as Tijuana Bibles, or movies like The Flintbones to establish this. And if you want a precedent concerning the matter specifically of CG models, gaming and content creation, we have 15 years of Machinimas, which while not pornographic necessarily, have used models of people’s favorite games to create videos, which have never had DMCA claims filed against them.

At best this is just further publicity to drive more attention to a Team Fortress 2 clone, because they know that no one will really try and fight the DMCA’s legally, though it’d be hilarious if someone did.

“The media and unrealistic expectations do way more damage to relationships than fucking porn.”

The same media that causes those unrealistic expectations: porn. Finally someone agreeing with me on this.

Five minutes? I found this in 1 minute:

    http://www.divorce.usu.edu/files/uploads/lesson3.pdf

“The most common reasons people give for their divorce are lack of commitment [porn] , too much arguing, infidelity [porn], marrying too young, unrealistic expectations [porn], lack of equality in the relationship, lack of preparation for marriage, and abuse.”

Commitment is obvious. Junkies aren’t very committed to anything except their own vices.

Infidelity: porn addiction feeds itself on novelty. Not a surprise that people that seek that high will also try to find it in real life.

Unrealistic expectations: this website is more concise:

    http://www.yourbrainonporn.com/porn-induced-ed-start-here

And at the middle of that PDF, you get this:

“In recent years, addiction to pornography has become a challenge to many marriages.”… and it continues the explanation.

Knowing all this, you would defend porn still, and call bullshit on what I said?

Yes. Addiction is a biological cause. Specially to porn.

On the article you posted: notice the two words they used: satisfaction and commitment. Two of the things porn erodes until there’s none. Addicts aren’t committed to anything but their poison of choice, and their brains are so destroyed they can’t find satisfaction outside that their drug. I just pointed out how porn is also a drug.

There’s nothing esoteric about the divorce rates. It’s all very well known the common causes.

Is there is something wrong with their relationship outside of the porn? In that case it is a symptom of problems in a relationship, and the couple need to figure out those problems or they were not as compatible as they thought. If they were married, they now have to file for divorce just to end their relationship and thus adding to that divorce rate you blamed porn for. The only time I can see porn being bad for marriage off the top of my head is if the person’s porn is of type that turns the significant other off. Even then it just means the person did not know the other person well enough that they should have taken that step into marriage. So in a way yeah I guess it does harm marriage. It reveals a truth about the significant other, that says they weren’t ready for marriage yet. On the other hand if the couple can get over that, the marriage would be stronger.

Your hypothesis requires me to accept porn as a normal healthy behavior. It’s not, mainly because of a factor you’re missing: porn desensitizes the brain.

    http://yourbrainonporn.com/brain-structure-and-functional-connectivity-associated-pornography-consumption-2014

And this effect that can be seen even in moderate consumption of porn affects the rest of the couple’s life. Given that you’ll need not only stronger sexual stimuli in bed, you’ll have a harder time enjoying spending time with your significant other.

If both partners watch porn, it will kill the marriage even faster. You now have two desensitized people in constant need of acrobatic circus sex to consider their sexual relationship satisfying.

Plus all the baggage that comes with marrying and living with someone together. The everyday issues.

There’s no way porn can have a place in a healthy relationship, nor porn have place in a healthy person’s lifestyle at all.

First I only jumped in because you seem to think porn is what affects people’s divorce rate. But let us say you are right, and disregard me looking through numerous so called studies that never account for selection bias, biased questions, studies only showing what they want to show and not looking at both sides, those people seeking a certain answer and choosing the statistical analysis in such a way they get what they want, because hey the boss, the person paying the researcher to find this answer, wants porn to be the cause of all evil and could pull that person’s funding, and their paycheck that they live off of if they don’t give the right results. (basically there are so many ways for human error to skew results to show what a biased person wants.) But once again lets say you’re right and not question the need for over 90 studies of the same subject if they really have proved that porn is evil. Is this desensitization really such a bad thing? It can’t be, because people are still having sex and having children. The world’s population is only growing yet we have all this evil porn killing relationships weird.

“implying piracy only applies to bad games”
Good try ro avoid the question but:
    Poser =/=> bad, Poser Hypocrisy

“not seeing the difference between a game tied to an online account/service, and a -physical (or pirated)- copy of said game”

So I only need to apply a Crack / fixed exe. to a game so it becomes “physical”, despite If I got it from steam? Then well yeah there is no difference at all. or I could just skip all that trouble and just get the gog ones and intall them on an external HDD.

Dude did you Read the whole source article? That also happens to be published in a internet wiki-blog. lets start

“The authors caution however that the observed brain volume association with pornography use could likewise be a “pre-condition,” rather than a consequence, of frequent pornography consumption. Individuals with lower brain volume in these reward centres may need more external stimulation to experience pleasure, and might therefore experience pornography consumption as more rewarding.”

    http://diyhpl.us/~bryan/papers2/paperbot/Brain%20Structure%20and%20Functional%20Connectivity%20Associated%20With%20Pornography%20Consumption:%20The%20Brain%20on%20Porn.pdf

Did you looked at its linear regression on a totally scatterd data plot? its hilarious

Now Lucien, You are lucky I can’t take you accountable for Dr Kunch work. He Cheery picked 64 guys with a pre-existing condition. and Did not used a Control group to tell the variance, that means:

“The only way to uncover what is really happening to the ‘brain on porn’
would be to conduct a kind of study where people (including those with
no previous interest in erotica) are randomised to groups who are given a lot of sexual material to consume, while others are given ‘control’
alternatives, and then brain scans of the groups are compared. However,
there are possible ethical and other problems with such a study.”

So if all these studies are wrong. And there’s no evidence proving either benefits nor harm, then it’s all up to personal judgment.

I’ll stay right where I started: this garbage is not worth defending.

I’m gonna stop posting because this is going nowhere. If you want, feel free to explain how trap porn improves a couple’s relationship.

    Have a nice day.

So the question is essentially: why should I care. The answer is simple: I want a civilization to be here when I die. I’m willing to wage on what works from the past than something we have no idea about right now.

Also, if you’re seeing more methodology errors, then you’d have to explain to me what and where is wrong. Assuming you care about it since I’m pretty much done with this argument.

I’m more interested in the conspiracy theory you got going on. If there’s a conspiracy to try and turn porn into an evil. Then by all means riddle me this:

How come all porn is completely free and accessible, yet other copyrights are fought tooth to be kept by their companies? There was this new copyright bill called “Protect Mickey Mouse Act” which extends copyright from age of author + 70 to age of author + 90. And it worked backwards, as in, things that would be free domain the year the the law passed, like the comic Superman issue 1 still fall under copyright.

Not to mention all the insane control laws that have been sneaked into congresses all over the world. SOPA, PIPA, NAFTA, and now TPP.

Really freaky how porn is free do distribute and nobody bats an eye. Talk about piracy and hell breaks loose, as if there was ever any harm done to artists that publishers and licenses companies haven’t done worse.

Not to personal judgement, but rather to Uncertainty. There are science built upon uncertainty like Quantum Physics, but that is another story.

Oh and trap/BDSM is a Roleplaying/Lifestyle that people do when the normal conventions of society are not good enought for them

But that is OK and you can have a Nice day too

Interesting points, and it was nice talking to you. I will say the “porn is evil” thing was more of a joking exaggeration on my part.I did not see any errors on the first page but neither was I going to go look for them to try to prove the research wrong. I was more making the point that until humans can get robots to do research for us, then we’re all going to be biased. For example we’re both on opposite sides of a discussion with our own biases affecting our viewpoints.

As for the copyright thing. That is so creators or companies that own the licenses to products can continue to make the most money possible. Maybe not the most ethical on their part but neither is piracy. Not too sure on the last part about porn being free. I think the free stuff makes money through ad revenue when the consumer has to sit through them to watch the videos.

Advertisers probably pay the website a sum of money, that the website uses to keep the website going and make a profit after costs. Not to mention if it was completely free I don’t think anybody would be doing it since I think it costs money to make the videos and pay the models. Anyway while it has been interesting I don’t think I’m gonna comment on your stuff again. I didn’t create this profile for long comments. But more goofy one liners about stupid things. Good bye and let us not do this again.

Well you see the thing is, whatever publicity they require at this point will be gotten from markets that generally don’t look at, care for video game character porn. This market may even be offended by the idea that there’s porn out there of this. I’m talking about older gamers, mothers, “normies” if you will. People who aren’t even aware that this exists.

Any straggling adopters part of the 20-29 “gamer” crowd sitting on the fence at this point are very unlikely to be swayed by blizzard going after porn. If they didn’t drop it after blizzard set up a multicultural diversity squad for its set of characters, then they’re not gonna quit over this.

Are you saying you’ve never seen bad publicity impact game sales? When people got pissed off at Bungie for lying with their marketing and basically lacking a story in Destiny, to sell expensive DLC that was separated from what was meant to be the core game – and that now they’re selling emotes etc. it impacted alot of gamers. A ton of bungie fans are now former bungie fans.
Big hatewagon going around and alot of people declaring to vote with their wallets. And I personally don’t blame them.
Do you think Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare dislikes won’t affect anything? Hating the game is practically trending, with reasons behind it like supply drops and devs not listening etc… Yes, the game will still sell, but yet there are plenty who have been turned off from supporting said franchise.

I bet you’ve heard of the hashtag #fuckkonami … Yep, again a big example of a widely popular boycott from gamers, cause by bad publicity.

I mean sure, virtual porn trying to be contained is not as big of a fiasco as some other bad publicity decisions, but will it annoy some? Yes, most likely the quite large audience creating said fan-porn and it will not exactly encourage their support for the franchise

I agree, this seems like something that can only result in bad publicity..
People who find the characters sexy and the “adult oriented fan-art” awesome won’t like what Blizzard is doing and the crowd not seemingly aware of the porn or just not into it, will be much more informed about it; Young people finding SFW legit news articles discussing about blizzard censoring overwatch porn – and you can guess what their next google search will be. Parents = not happy.

Yeah Destiny was sure a big flop!

Devs bragged about how much money they were making after putting microtransactions in Payday 2, so clearly that bad press didn’t hurt them.

And if you think the next Call of Duty won’t be patheticly profitable, I don’t know what to tell you.

Konami is different – Konami is not only acting like morons (and everyone knows it) but they’ve stopped selling games at all! So it’s not like we can see any future impact on their bottom line (but they’ve been reporting increased revenues from mobile, so I guess we can). All that “Fuck Konami” and Hideo treatment stories doesn’t seem to have effected MGS5’s sales at all.

Sadly, bad press doesn’t do jack shit, really. In a just world it would, but it does not.

Well true, the impact any bad publicity does have isn’t in any way as big as it seemingly “should be” – that I can very well agree on :P

I still do think there is somewhat of an impact, albeit often too little to be significant. (Yes, I’m sure CoD will again be very profitable, no matter how much people would fill forums with complaints after buying it)
