Strange, highly advanced machinery on the lone island of Ark churns out armies of dangerous androids at the behest of Lord Lokahndril. Once a peaceful man, Lokahndril has weaponized the technology of the island in order to overtake the land. The only survivor of the invasions, R-Blazer, will infiltrate the labyrinth, and use Lokahndril’s own weapons against him. His goal: defeat the elite army of anthropomorphic cyborg animals, and defeat the unstoppable warlord to save the island. This is the world of Retro Blazer.

Retro Blazer is an old-school, first-person shooter inspired by classic 3D FPSs, with a distinct, 32-bit look—the levels are rendered in 3D but the weapons and enemies are animated sprites, just like from days long before—and classic game mechanics reminiscent of the likes of Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Star Wars: Dark Forces. It has no cover system or automatically refilling health.

Featured above is a video of the game in Alpha, taken two years ago. It’s still being worked on, and it seems that we may be getting it this year, according to a Facebook post from New Year’s Eve. You can download the Alpha test and the engine it uses here.

Retro-Blazer will be on PC, Mac, and Linux (and maybe other platforms) some time in the near future.
