BioWare Teases Potential Sequel for Jade Empire

BioWare may be returning to their classic action RPG Jade Empire sometime in the near future, if the words from some of the studio bosses are anything to go by.

Speaking with Game Informer, Bioware’s Creative Director Mike Laidlaw said that “Jade as a sequel is never dead.”

“There are a lot of people still at the studio who worked on that game and want to get back to it,” BioWare’s General Manager Aaryn Flynn added.

“I think one of the advantages to getting back to it after a long time is not only nostalgia is a very powerful feeling in people, but skipping a generation of hardware is actually really exciting because it feels like it’s not an evolution. It’s a revolution of what you can do, and I think that’s the kind of thing that brings people. What if we were to revolutionize Jade Empire and brought it back in that regard? That’s the kind of talk that still happens around the studio.”

Would you guys like to see a proper sequel to Jade Empire? Sound off in the comments below!

Too bad. Jade Empire was really good. The current Bioware is gonna butcher it. How many LGBT characters do you think it will have? Maybe it will have the first trans woman to ever have a successful surgery. Oh, maybe it will dive into women’s rights because that’s what a magicial Chinese kung fu game needs.

A Modern Bioware game about Asian culture? Ha ha, fuck that noise.

Bioware’s gone to shit, and you can bet your britches a Jade Empire sequel would be more of the same.

Besides that, 10 years is a long time. Those kinds of sequels tend to be so far removed from the original that they may as well not have even made it.

Why not?I love the original and they can never ruin that.Even if the current Bioware is as likely to deliver a good Jade Empire games as Bethesda is to deliver a quality Elder Scrolls game.I see no harm in this.I guess we’ll see how bad things are at that studio after Andromeda.

  9. Donwel
    November 11, 2016 at 1:16 pm

Honestly I think if Andromeda doesn’t pull in massive numbers EA is going to shitcan the studio.
After DA 2, ME3 and Cisquisition all performing poor to middling, Andromeda will have to pull in big numbers. However, with [current year] bioware I don’t see that happening.
Didn’t they only give hours played instead of copies sold for Inquisition, or am I thinking of something else?

They did, yes. It didn’t do well by all accounts. It was given some GOTY awards by SJW journalists, and then promptly forgotten.

I think Andromeda will go the same way, ESPECIALLY if the rumors about Alien Trump being the villain are true.

  15. Domhnall
    November 11, 2016 at 1:54 pm

I actually didn’t really like the game. I enjoyed the setting, but the combat was repetitive and WAY too easily broken. I think I beat the last boss without taking a single hit. And even before that, combat was just “mash attack until the enemy attacks, then you hit block, then you go back to spamming attack.”

I would be excited if this was the original Bioware with the doctors at the helm. But ever since they’ve been bought by EA they’re quality in games has been declining becuase they’ve tried to appeal to the general audience instead of the RPG/PC players.

If Jade Empire had actually gotten a sequel back in the day, it’d have been outsourced to Obsidian with a three-month development cycle, come out busted and buggy and without an ending and it still would’ve been better than anything present-day Bioware could manage.

Thing is, the original Jade Empire did have gay pairings in it. I actually got my female character to hook up with the princess because well, my gal was hot how could she resist her?! But it was actually subtle and wasn’t pronounced and beaten over your head like ten gay pride parades in San Francisco.
