Battlefield 2042 Features Non-Binary Specialist

Battlefield 2042 non-binary

The latest Battlefield 2042 gameplay trailer, detailing the Specialists players will control, has confirmed one of them are non-binary.

The new Specialists trailer shows the characters of the Recon, Assault, Support, (two each bar Support); each of whom bring their own skills, gear, and weapons to the fight. You can find the new trailer below.

At this time of writing, the trailer has a 45,000 likes and 19,000 dislikes. Some have commented the Specialists feel too much like characters in a “hero shooter” such as Overwatch or Apex Legends, and robs the feeling of being a foot soldier.

What has caught the attention of some is Emma “Sundance” Rosier- one of the Assault Specialists. As EA Dice Community Manager Keven Johnson tweeted about each of the Specialists, EA Studios Lead Community Manager Adam Freeman answered a fan’s question. They had noticed Johnson was using they/them pronouns.

Yep. Sundance is non-binary and uses the Pronouns They/Them,” Freeman confirmed. While most seem to be be excited for how the character plays, some seem to lament this factor. Speculation on why they feel this was could include it being perceived as pandering, out of place in the game, or included in such a way that it took an executive to outright state it to be realized.

The news is akin to Ubisoft announcing Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege would be adding a transgender operator. Again, this information was only mentioned in passing in a character bio on the game’s official website, and was later confirmed by the game’s writer.

Battlefield 2042 was recently delayed to November 19 across Windows PC (via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Origin), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
