Battlefield 2042 Announced, Launches October 22

Battlefield 2042

Electronic Arts and EA DICE have announced Battlefield 2042, along with rumors insisting there will be an open beta this month.

You can find the reveal trailer premiere below, complete with large scale fights, and plenty of destruction.

Earlier leaks [1, 2, 3] claimed the game is 20 years after Battlefield 4as the US and Russia are on the brink of war, and specialists born from veterans in proxy wars aim to shape the future.

Players use near-future weapons in battle across 64 versus 64 matches on seven giant maps. The leak also claims that before an open beta or possibly alpha this month, June 15th will host private testing for content creators and streamers.

Players can utilize two attachments on a weapon, along with further customizing their gadgets and vehicles in-battle as the situation call for. The Heroes mechanic from Battlefront 2 also returns, now called Professionals.

These grant one specialist in your squad, who can use special gadgets to set them apart; such as a medic with a healing dart. These specialists will be based on Battlefield‘s four classes, and each have a unique Specialty and Trait. Squads can also spawn vehicles, and even a robotic dog with a gun-turret for a head.

Along with the maps being “the biggest in Battlefield history,” maps will need to be seized by capturing sectors (via seizing multiple points within). Once a sector is taken by a team, it cannot be reclaimed by the opposition. At least one of these sectors is as large as a medium-sized Battlefield 3 map. These maps are to encourage teamwork with your squad.

The leaks also claim no crossplay at launch due to older generation consoles not being able to handle it, the return of Levolution destructible environments, tornadoes and twisters that can lift and throw cars, wingsuits, grapple-hooks, and firing zip-lines.

As many of these elements are seen in the trailer above, the claim about the upcoming open beta may also be true. Finally, the trailer itself notes there will be a gameplay reveal June 13th. An E3-style “open beta available now” announcement would be a way to generate interest for the game.

We will keep you informed as we learn more.

UPDATE: The official website has confirmed several details about the game. This includes 128 player matches, Conquest, Breakthrough, and the new Hazard Zone multiplayer modes (an all-new high-stakes multiplayer experience), dynamic maps with storms, seven maps, specialists, and the US/Russia conflict using No-Pat Task Forces (promising them a future) story.

The game’s live service, updates over time, and Season Passes were also detailed. This will include three-month long seasons with free and Battle Pass content, and four new specialists.

We’re taking a new approach to live service for a Battlefield game where players will be given the services and evolution they have come to expect from modern multiplayer games, all aimed at keeping the community playing together for years to come.

We’ll be evolving our world and expanding on the fiction through Seasons, each one lasting for about three months. Every Season will come with a new free and paid-for Battle Pass, delivering new content to chase after.

In our first year of live service, we will deliver four Seasons, with four Battle Passes, four new Specialists, along with more fresh content.

We’ll have more to share on the first Season of Battlefield 2042 before launch.

The FAQ also confirms an Open Beta. Though dates were not mentioned, it sounded more akin being a distant point in time. “In the months leading up to launch, we will host an Open Beta* available to all players across all platforms. If you pre-order any of the editions of Battlefield 2042, you will get early access to the Open Beta. Stay tuned for more Open Beta details.”

In addition, “a limited number of Battlefield veteran players will be able to participate in a Technical Playtest in the beginning of July 2021.”

Battlefield 2042 launches October 22nd for Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store, Origin, and Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
