Warner Bros. shared a teaser trailer for the Barbie movie, the first live-action film starring Margot Robbie as the titular girl living in a plastic-like world.
The first teaser, narrated by none other than Helen Mirren, proudly states “Since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls.” It’s a clear parody on the prehistoric intro of Stanley Kubrick’s legendary film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Following the larger-than-life monolith that is also Margot Robbie’s appearance as the titular real-life doll, we get some short clips from the actual film – which also stars Ryan Gosling as Ken and Issa Rae in an unknown role.
Here’s the teaser trailer:
The Barbie movie was originally announced way back in 2009, and was being produced by Universal Pictures. Development began in 2014 as Sony picked up rights to distribute, but multiple writer and director changes led to recasting the main actress several times.
Production halted and Sony lost the rights to Warner Bros. Pictures, who are now set to distribute the film. Based on the Mattel fashion doll toys, Greta Gerwig is directing and co-writing with Noah Baumbach.
The star was recast to Robbie back in 2019, who also serves as producer under her LuckyChap Entertainment studio, alongside Mattel Films and Heyday Films.
Supporting cast includes the aforementioned Issa Rae, as well as: Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Cera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, and Kate McKinnon.
The Barbie movie will premiere in theaters on July 21st, 2023.
