In a year of endless throwbacks, nostalgic cash grabs and remastered ports, a headline like the one you just read isn’t all that surprising. Yes, we’ve learned Atari is working on a new gaming console of some kind.
The news comes via Atari CEO Fred Chesnais (via GamesBeat) “We’re back in the hardware business,” he said.
While Chesnais wouldn’t reveal that much about the console, he said its based on PC technology, and that its design is being handled by Atari proper, and it will be revealed sometime in the future.
A curious teaser website was published by the company recently, with a not-so-subtle teaser trailer (featured above) at what the new hardware will probably be titled: Ataribox. Did they hint the console will have a woodgrain panel, just like the original consoles?
Chesnais noted that Atari’s revival is already happening – since they filed for bankruptcy protection in 2013, Chesnais purchased the company and promised to make Atari great again. With the company now profitable again, they’re looking to expand their roster of games and licensing.
What would you guys like to see in a new Atari console? Proper hardware to back modern games, or something that just includes all their old titles? Sound off in the comments below!
