Atari announced they have made the acquisition of a dozen retro arcade IPs, which includes 80s classics Berserk and Frenzy.
Atari plan on “seek[ing] to expand digital and physical distribution of the classic titles, create new games based on the IP, and explore brand and merchandising collaborations”.
Previously they have created “reimaginings” of some of their own classic titles present on consoles such as the Atari 2600. Recent examples include Centipede, Yars, and Caverns of Mars, the latter of which launched just a week ago.
“Berzerk is one of those foundational games that so many people first encountered playing on an Atari console,” said Atari CEO Wade Rosen. “Berzerk, and the other titles included in this acquisition, are a perfect fit for our strategy of commercializing classic retro IP.”
Chances are their primary goals are to recreate “reimaginings” of these acquired titles. However their statement of creating new games based on the IPs likely also means that many of these classic titles of the past will see new games for modern audiences.
