Exclusivity spreads again in the industry as developers started making a name for themselves, with games like Soul Calibur suddenly having different guest characters depending on what platform the game was played in.
Something that could be seen as a fun extra for your platform of choice slowly soured moving forward, with exclusivity becoming more of an anti-consumer practice than a bonus for supporting your favorite platform, eventually infecting even PC gaming.
Back in early 2019, Ubisoft would make a point to not publish its new releases on Steam, opting instead for the Epic Games Store, claiming that Steam’s 30% fee was unreasonable, even de-listing some titles from Steam after users bought them.
Ubisoft just recently came back to Steam after three years of absence, bringing back Anno 1800, Roller Champions and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, with the three titles currently having mixed Steam reviews due to various reasons.
Something that players noticed was the lack of achievements in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which prompted Steam users to question in the forums if it was intentional.
It was eventually got confirmed by an Ubisoft developer that Steam achievements won’t be supported for the game, possibly making it the least enticing exclusive content in gaming history:
Achievements for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are present in the Uplay version only, as the Epic Games Store version was released one year before achievements were added to the platform.
It makes you question how hard it would be to bring achievements from one launcher to the other, as other Ubisoft games have achievements on both Uplay and Steam working just fine. Perhaps Ubisoft still harbors some bitterness towards Steam, although it would be a nonsensical way of showing it.
It feels petty to complain about something as trivial as achievements, but gatekeeping players from them because of their launcher of choice is somehow even pettier.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Windows (Through Steam).
