Arc System Works Announces Dragon Ball FighterZ for PC, PS4, and Xbox One

It’s finally happened – Arc System Works and publisher Bandai Namco have announced Dragon Ball FighterZ, a brand new 2.5D fighting game. In case you missed it, you can find our exclusive, hands-on impressions and gameplay for the game from this year’s E3 here.

The new game will retain Arc System Works’ hallmark anime-style of visuals, and will launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One sometime early next year. Featured above, you can view the game’s announcement trailer.

The game features a three-on-three battling system, enabling players to pair up their favorite or most versatile fighters into a team. There will be signature moves from a variety of characters from across the Dragon Ball series.

Producer Tomoko Hiroki noted the shift from 3D to 2.5D was because certain things can only be done in this more traditional fighting game style. As per Arc System Works visual prowess, the game looks like traditional 2D animations but varying camera angles can make things change up.

Here’s a rundown on the game, via Bandai Namco:

DRAGON BALL FighterZ, developed by Arc System Works, one of the most celebrated developers of classic 2D fighting titles, delivers an explosive, action-packed game that combines classic 2D fighting visuals with advanced 3D character models that look and feel as if they are ripped straight out of the DRAGON BALL anime series.

DRAGON BALL FighterZ gives fans of all skill levels the opportunity to feel like their favorite DRAGON BALL character. Featuring 3 vs. 3 battle mechanics, new and seasoned players are sure to experience the epic scope of DRAGON BALL as they select their three-character team to take into battle. The game also encourages players to train and master more than one fighter and style, delivering richer gameplay and motivation to take down the competition.

“The DRAGON BALL franchise is tailor suited for the fighting game genre, and DRAGON BALL FighterZ will be the next exciting addition to a long history of great fighting games,” said Eric Hartness, Vice President of Marketing at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. “Arc System Works brings a pedigree and record of quality that fighting game fans can trust; with awesome visuals players might mistake as actual 2D animation from the famed DRAGON BALL series.”

Players who can’t wait to dive into the action in DRAGON BALL FighterZ’s won’t have to wait long as a closed beta for the game will be held on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 before the end of summer. More details pertaining to the closed beta will be shared soon.

Ain’t it just a little too soon for more Dragonball reveals? Xenoverse 2 came out at the tail end of October last year.

You could at least give it a year before announcing more. I doubt anybody’s going to be playing Xenoverse a few months from now too, but don’t these two games technically compete with each other as well?

Shame Bamco didn’t give the series to CC2 now that they’re finally done with Naruto; I would’ve loved to get the DBZ story fully in game format as well.

And it only took them almost 20 years to realise “hey, maybe these guys that make the anime fighters should turn our anime into an actual fighter instead of Namco just rereleasing the same arena brawler every 2 years.”

I always hated how it’s practically always a 3D fighter as I can never really get into them, so it’s always good to see whenever Dragonball decides going 2D.

They haven’t done that with any IP work they’ve done tho. Their Hokuto no Ken game was a one off, so was Sengoku Basara X and the handheld Dragonball games they’ve worked on so far. The only kind of exception was Persona 4 Arena with Ultimax but that was more a sequel which brought 8 new characters which is fair enough in my book.

It would be reasonable to judge it based on the roster – if there are any glaring omissions then logic dictates that there may be DLC or a Super edition later.

One is an MMO with 3D arena battles, and one is a Guilty Gear style 2.5D fighter. They won’t compete.

Also now is a perfect time to announce it with the Super anime in full swing. They can make that female Super Saiyan the preorder character or something.

ArcSys doesn’t do huge rosters in their IP work. Hokuto no Ken had 10 characters and no updated versions Sengoku Basara X had 12 and also no updated version. Their most recent title Dragonball Extreme Butoden had 17 characters (25 if you count transformations and such) which is already /a lot/ for ArcSys games and it also received neither DLC nor an updated version.

As annoying as I find the ridiculous amount of rereleases and updates ArcSys usually does, in cases like this it seems like the IP holders want one and done deals which I very much welcome.

If I had to guess I’d say the game will feature about 20 distinct playable characters, maybe a pre-order bonus one and that’ll be that.

  24. Nagato

Bamco are not known for Super editions, but I’ll still be on the lookout for red flags. A preorder bonus character usually is one such, same with a season pass.

Not sure how much influence Namco will have over this. Hopefully we can avoid all the usual trappings that come with games these days. Extreme Butoden had characters unlocked through a demo similar to how some event Pokémon were distributed. I’m totally fine with that but pre-order bonuses need to die.

All the influence the owner of an IP being worked on by someone who doesn’t own said IP can have. They are cheap as fuck though so they probably won’t bother paying for the DLC to be made but if they do; glorified skins.

That just means that the Fighter genre just looking dead from how so many series have died or gone to shit. Doesn’t Guilty Gear still need to beat King of Fighters for the title of normal 2D fighter?

You realize Infinite World came out _after_ Burst Limit right?
And Infinite World was basically the best 2.5D DBZ Fighting game(I get that Budokai 3 is loved, but be honest, the way that you gave characters moves was shite, you weren’t guaranteed to have a certain type of move with the customization system, you just had a certain number of moves, or a certain number of items or things like that, in Infinite World, you’re guaranteed to have an ultimate, you’re guaranteed to have two supers, you’re guaranteed to have 1 slot for items and 4 slots for abilities like transformations[which they also fixed so you have ONE transformation capsule that goes up to the max, instead of having 5 or so slots taken up when you want all of goku’s transformations])
I’m hoping that they take a note from Infinite World and Budokai 3, personally I’d like it to be a mix of the two, Infinite World for the majority, and adding in the struggles that Budokai 3 had, like Beam Struggles or Exchange of Blows, both of which are missing from Infinite World(the one and only downside to Infinite World by comparison to be perfectly honest)

If we are going to call any fighting game series “normal” for 2D, and PARTICULARLY 2.5D, it’d definitely be Street Fighter. King of Fighters had a good run no doubt and would probably be second (easily third today with Mortal Kombat/Injustice) overall in popularity. Guilty Gear though is definitely a game series I’d consider to be about mid level as far as popularity goes as the years have gone by, and is by far created one of the best made fighting games to date truly mechanics wise.

  56. Axel of Flames
    Axel of Flames
    June 9, 2017 at 11:50 pm

Yeah, trust me, they will find a way to make more in the future until the series itself is finally dead, and then probably do even more. Honestly though, this is probably the best thing that could happen for an anime fighter, especially getting such a highly renowned developer working on it, not to mention that if it is a truly MvC or Skull Girl style 3v3 game, than I am sorry to say, but with the lack luster showing for MvCI as of so far have me EXTREMELY hyped for this game.

If you like button mashing that’s fine but I want my fighters to have a little meat on their bones which hasn’t happened for a single Dragonball game out there. The closest is the fan game Hyper Dragonball Z which had a lot of amazing sprite work done for it and some neat mechanics. It’s still nowhere close to fulfilling the potential Dragonball has for a fighter but it stands lightyears above all the official stuff.

Just look at how much time supers and stage transitions waste in those games (Injustice more so than MK). It’s clear that NRS are not making these games for people who’d play them competitively, it’s to wow people who have no idea what makes a decent fighter with some flashy moves and skinnerbox them with grinding loot and levels.
