This came out of left field – Francis Ford Coppola has announced a video game adaptation for Apocalypse Now, the 1979 classic that he was director, producer, and co-writer on. The new game is seeking crowdfunding on Kickstarter, and his assembled team at Erebus LLC is made up of veteran game developers.
Described as an “immersive, psychedelic horror RPG,” the goal is to make a compelling war-themed game that isn’t a first-person shooter. Their goal with crowdfunding is to make a survival horror experience, instead of going to publishers as the team claims they would turn the project into a shooter anyway.
With a base goal of $900,000, should the game be funded they’ll develop it for PC. At $2.5 million they’ll work on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, and at $3 million they’ll add virtual reality support. They have lots of pre-production done, a story written, and a working prototype.
Here’s their pitch video:
“Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come,” Coppola said in a press release.
“Today, I’m joined by new daredevils, a team who want to make an interactive version of Apocalypse Now, where you are Captain Benjamin Willard amidst the harsh backdrop of the Vietnam War. I’ve been watching video games grow into a meaningful way to tell stories, and I’m excited to explore the possibilities for Apocalypse Now for a new platform and a new generation.”
Montgomery Markland (Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera) is directing, Lawrence Liberty (Fallout: New Vegas, DC Universe Online, The Witcher) is executive producer, Rob Auten (Gears of War and Battlefield) is writing, and Obsidian Entertainment design director Josh Sawyer is providing counsel and guidance for the project.
